Imperial Trash.

Are we starting new threads? Are we allowed to "spy" on the other thread?

First set due this Sunday?

No more questions (yet).

team A remains here,
team A+ has its own thread.

Since this in not a competition, there is no spying issue.
And the first set is due on monday.
(If I understood Pigswill's instructions right)

edit : now I need to install the patch!
Basic question (probably already answered but didn't see) : what victory condition do we go for?
I think we start in a general "domination type" direction, optioons to run for space, diplo or conquest remaining open?

We assume are allowed and even supposed to spy and lurk in both threads given the objectives of this game: As Pigswill stated, we are not competing, but trying to learn from eachother.

Remember to post a standard summary at the end of your report:

I still think having a fixed objective will help players focus and make games more comparable. Early on the difference is limited, but later on comparing a game going for culture, space or domination does not work. Also finish dates will be spread too far apart and at some point the home and away philosophy does not work anymore. with a common goal, all games will head in the same general direction.

I propose to fix victory goal for fastest date being domination or conquest.

The next game we could send our Emperor games into space.

All going for space would also be interesting.
Less focus on warfare, more focus on science.

I guess we need a vote?

Conquest/domination vs. Space Race

Well setting up a game for space = focus on big commerce/science cities
or
Setting up for domination/conquest = focus on smaller production sites

Can make quite a difference even in early decisions. I prefer to know from the start what the goal is.

At the start of a game its a bit early to decide on victory. Whatever victory you go for you'll be looking to expand initially and get a solid base. Warfare is generally not so easy on normal speed as epic making space more likely but let's get the first round played and then continue the debate.

I'm not keen on introducing competition between players because I think that the objective of the thread is to help each other win on emperor and people might be less likely to give advice to a 'rival'.

Edit: Cross-post with remconius. For the first hundred turns or so there are no big cities. A military game needs at least one research city and a space game needs at least one military production city. By 1500bc its unlikely that anyone would have more than three cities so its not a big deal at this stage.

I don't think anyone is talking about competition between players but just making the point that its easier to compare games if everyone is aiming for the same victory (also make sit easier to learn). It won't make much difference in the early turns but will later on.

It won't make much difference, but it makes some difference.

Last night I played a game focusing on early conquest. Cities 2 and 3 were built 2-3 squares from the capital to keep maintenance to minimum, knowing they would never grow beyond size 10. For a space race I would plan these cities to also have a long-term future.

I dont mind waiting a turnset, but I see no harm in fixing a victory goal from the start.

If you're going for early conquest then you need to know that you can acquire enough territory for domination without having to wait for astronomy. Easy enough if you're playing any type of pangea map, not so easy to know in advance if you're playing any type of continent map.

:nono:
early conquest is not about land
It's about killing everyone.
This means being able to reach every other civ with large armies asap.
On continents, this is generally impossible.

Given the fact we are playing a continents map means we'll most likely need astronomy to win by conquest or domination, making it quite a challenge... wiping out the home continent while rushing to Astronomy and overwhelming the other continent.

A space race is also a challenge on Emperor, but perhaps more manageable?

I don't know, I never won a space race on emperor:mischief:

Given that well probably need astronomy for any war victory then we can safely assume that we're looking at early research/lightbulbs which means we'd initially be looking at substantial cities rather than small unit pumps.

Quantity usually overwhelms quality generally in domination/conquest games. You can afford to be down one layer of techs as long as you pump out mass volumes of units. Same goes with science, lots of cities at low percentage science will out tech a small empire with large cities.

This is, of course, highly speculative as I suck at domination/conquest games

Darius isn't the greatest leader for domination either, he's not bad though. I'd have gone for Asoka or Zara myself.

Really looking forward to this game. Should be a lot of fun!

As for victory conditions, I can see the benefit in us all aiming at the same one - makes the games more comparable and possibly easier to vote on? But it shouldn't make much difference really early on? Perhaps a discussion for after this round?

Edit - I wanted to think about this start while I should be working. Can anyone tell me what techs Darius starts with - I want to say Hunting and Agriculture, but not 100% sure. :)
