IMPORTANT: Support page & New Fix for Radeon Cards

Radeon 9600 series AGP 256MB

unpack art files worked to for me.

Now when I get to the game/first loading screen where the earth is just coming the graphics crap out on me and start flashing in all the colors, especailly when I move the mouse. This should just be a minor issue of settings, but could someone please help me figure it out?

The first link and the last comment are the same problems I encounter.

I guess I could play a "mystery" game. I so disappointed.

Another thing to try:

If your game still doesn't work after using the unpak fix, try this:

1. In windows turn on the setting to see hidden files
This is under Tools --> Folder Options, then the View tab.

2. Go to C:\Documents and Settings\USERNAME\Application Data\My Games\Civilization IV

3. If there is a folder called "cache" in there delete the folder.

4. Run the game.

I did a search for regedit and did not find anything for Civ IV so forgive me if this is a rehash...

After following the instructions for correcting the Radeon problem, I still had to do the unpak. That did not work.... It would start and spin the cursor ant then quit...

****************HOWEVER***********

I read few things indicating that you needed to reinstall into the orginal directory. Which got me thinking, what would be the cause. I uninstalled Civ IV and checked that the path was completely gone. Ok something else.

when start -> run -> regedit.

Low and behold I still had registry entry for Civ IV. I deleted them all and reinstalled. I now have a Sony Vaio PCV-RX850 with a Radeon X800 AGP running Civ IV... And the last install I did not need to do an UNPAK...

Just wanted to post Im ****ing furious.

I have a Radeon 9550 AGP and it has taken me over three hours to get this game running on my desktop. This is just crazy !

People are not going to have such patience FGS. Already the spanish forums are crammed with complaints on ATI cards regarding Civ IV installation issues.

FINALLY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! THIS WORKS, everyone should do this, PROBLEM SOLVED! THX.

every time i start the game, the cache reappears.
does anyone else have that problem?

In my civ 4 folder, there is no assets folder. There is one called custom assets, and there is no art0.fpk in that. I tried reinstalling a thousand times already.

That's normal. The game uses cache for the XML data. It's a good idea to clear the cache after a major change to the game, like after unpaking or patching.

That's because you looked in the wrong fodler. You need to look under the folder where the game is installed, not under My Documents.

Why does the games graphics get all wacky whenever there is a movie playing? I know I can turn movies off (how does that effect screen like diplomacy?), but my system shouldnt be having all these issues with a game I should definatly be able to play this game I just bought with all movies. Are there settings I can play with? Will a patch come out eventually?

Also what is the status with problems with Nvidia geforce cards. Are they supposed to try the same fix as Rad? I have seen this question posted a lot but havent seen a response.

dell inspiron 5100 with radeon 7500 is finally working. Tried the unpak fix, clear the cache fix and no movies fix and the game would still not start. Downloaded the omega drivers and ureka the game now fires up. Thanks to the people on the board for figuring out the solution as I never would have.
The omega drivers also allow 1028 resolution which is great. Tony

You may want to turn off movies for now, and re-enable it after a patch comes out.

The unpak thing just unpacks the game asset files, so if you want you can try it to see if it makes any difference for your nVidia card. It doesn't cause any harm.

I did that and it still does exactly the same thing. It just stops after the "loading" splash and then the CD drive beeps at me.
I'm going to try reinstalling. I don't know what could have changed, but it was working fine until yesterday.
