In multiplayer who's the first one deciding the Civ transition?

I started wondering about this, since it seems like a crucial factor in multiplayer matches: who gets to choose their civilization first when advancing to a new Age? is it simply a "first one clicking takes it"?

In single-player, the player always goes first, but it’s probable that duplicate civilizations aren’t allowed. So, I’m curious if they’ve said anything specific about how this works in multiplayer. Could one player 'steal' a civilization choice from another by simply clicking it first?"

They only talked about MP in the first live stream. I think the answer was "there will be no restrictions" so the MP community can decide it's own rules.

A "bid system" with the points earned from the previous eras would be interesting.

Duplicate civilizations should be available as an option (I believe developers told about it already) and I assume in most of MP games it will be enabled.

If not, I believe default will be just selecting civilizations based on player order in game. But surely, more options could be there - no detailed info yet.

They spoke about it in one of their previous videos about MP and modding. And the answer is: it is up to the players.

They never had "official" MP tournaments in CIV6, but they realized there was a lot of modding made for equilibrium, and that each MP pool had their own rules. So they decided not to make anything restrictive, and leave the choises to the players (and their mods/reddit/league).

After that you could have several possibilities:
- public order by lowest legacy points to highest (gives information to higher points players)
- hidden raffle, highest points choose first
- each team make one choice (simultaneous) at a time
- Historic choice only (no impact of leader)
- duplicates allowed (most likely only before enough DLC flesh out the choises),
- etc...

All those possibilities could be modded for implementation, so it will really depends on the playgroup.

Yeah I could see any, if there are multiple rule options thats best.
My favorites would be in order:

A) Leader goes first (Score or legacy points)
B) Losers go first
C)Random draw

As well as a combo of "Pick two" If priority player takes your 1 you get second.
I never play multiplayer though soooooo have fun.

It has never been the case that in multiplayer, players could not play the same civ or leader, so there is no reason to start that restriction now.

It is a non-issue, human players should be able to play whoever they want, even if that means there are duplicates.

I also assume you will not be able to see which civ your rival progresses with before picking your own.

If we aim to avoid duplicates, the approach might be: whoever unlocked the civ first gets to decide whether to pick it or not. For example, whoever improves 3 horses first gets the first say on Mongolia.

This would complicate things to no end. What if you show UI for this player, but the player choses different civ?
