I'm getting kind of angry here. In at least three different games played in the last week I have lost Galleys to "treacherous waters" AFTER building the Great Lighthouse (By the way, I am playing Vanilla CivIII, v1.29f, Warlord level, Archipelago maps with all Civs). At first I thought because the galleys had been built before the GL, I had to take them back to dock to be retrofitted. That didn't work (although I have not taken them to a city with a harbor yet). Then I waited until after building the GL before creating the Galley and it STILL visited Davey Jones' Locker! Even after exiting the game and rebooting the computer this happened.

I have never noticed this issue before in playing Civ. Am I doing something wrong? Do I need to reload my game? Does the "Travel Safely in Sea Squares" benefit only apply to Galleys created in harbors? Rogue invisible hurricanes? Be There Monsters Here?

Harbors only allow ships to be upgraded and they create veterans for ships built in a harbor city. No effect on water travel.

It is technology that allows ships to travel over sea or ocean tiles. I forget what it is in C3, but one tech gives sea travel and another grants ocean travel. I think it is magnetism and navigation for ocean. Astronomy for sea.

The lighthouse adds one to the range of a ship and increases the chances of survivial in sea tiles, iirc. It does not grant travel over ocean.

The Great Lighthouse only keeps ships safe in sea tiles. Otherwise, your ships have a 50% chance of sinking each turn in ocean tiles (if you didn't have the great lighthouse, they would have a 50% chance of sinking in sea tiles too). (In Conquests, if you are Seafaring, the chance is only 25%). Check the link about Sinking Chances in my signature for more info.

Mark , simple answer to this problem , as in any journey there is always one problem too little beer. Hang on, i think its too much beer ... i can never get this rule right...

Anyway follow the advice from the people in the know, ie above, and follow my advice for a fun amusing game.
