Incomplete Installation error 55 Please Help

Okay, I did the safe mode trick and the game was finally able to launch. Seems to play fine (apart from starting in windowed mode, ick). For a test I started a new game on a tiny oval map. This took about 5 minutes to load up to the point of being able to move.

I will have to test on loading later saves...I suspect the long load time issue is still there...we'll see.

Thank you, Hephaiston!!!

I think there is something iffy with the newer version of avast! If you experience freezes or slow loading times try turning off avast! COMPLETELY for the duration of playing (just turning it off, don't add any exceptions)

Ok. I've had this issue since the last Hotfix, and now finally fixed it. Here's what I went through. This is on Win XP and already running as Admin.

1) Follow Steam's instructions (modifying slightly - since this is Win XP, it's easier to open a command line and cd to Program Files, then Steam, then Bin, and then run the Steamservice.exe /Install command. (No joy here.)
2) Delete c:\Program Files\Steam\Steam.dll, and relaunch Steam to let it update the client. (No joy here.)
3) Defrag the hard drive. (No joy here.)
4) Increase the page file size. (No joy here.)
5) Use the Steam client to delete all Civ local content, and reinstall the game. (No joy here.)
6) Disable avast! and then launch Civ. (Joy! The game updates complete, and Civ launches.)

After successfully launching, I quit out, reenabled avast!, and launched Civ again. It's still good. There was just something about the hotfix install that avast! didn't like...

Weird, some folks seem to be fine just by turning off avast. That didn't work for me, but I only disabled script blocking and real-time shields (I only know how to turn off individual components without disabling from startup, and if I'm gonna reboot anyway, might as well safe mode to be sure!).

Interesting ... didn't think that avast might be responsible for my mega-loading times too. How do you completely disable it without rebooting?

In Main Menu.. or.. Main Bar.. whatever you call that thing on the bottom of your screen, Right-Click on the avast! icon and use "Manage Sheilds" or something like that (appears as second option, i'm using polish version reason why I can't tell what's it's called) then you just choose the option, you can manually turn it back on after you done, no reboots requires since it works perfectly :)

Just to be careful, you are putting your PC at risk.

The solution with "avast" works perfectly.
I stop all the resident protection, and I restart civilization 5. Steam finished downloading the update and the game starts :D.

Once the game started, quit and relaunch avast.
The game plays perfectly, thank you very much for this tip :goodjob:.

If you encounter random freezes, keep avast! turned off for the duration of playing Civ V, as long as you don't surf the net meanwhile playing you should be fine.

gringo, if following the above doesn't work for you, try hephaiston's solution of starting windows in safe mode with networking.

While this has gotten the game running for me, I still have the original long (or non) load time issue, which seriously gimps the game for me. Current times:

1) start a new game - 5 minutes
2) load a save (mid-late game, standard map) - abandoned after 25 minutes 'loading'
3) load a save (new game, ~ turn 20, tiny map) - abandoned after 10 minutes loading
4) multiplayer--when hosting, hangs on load screen
5) multiplayer--joining a game, hangs on load screen

So, effectively, civ 5 will only work for me if I start a new game and play it through in one sitting. Which pretty much means it doesn't work for me anymore, especially since my preferred mode to play is multiplayer.

Any other suggestions for this loading issue? I first ran into it about July 9. Prior to that, the game was fine.

edit: woops, missed page 3. I will try my load tests with Avast off or with the previous version installed. Cheers for the tips!

Okay, guys, I'm going to have to conclude this was some conflict between that latest Avast! update and civ 5 and/or Steam.

I've uninstalled Avast! and reinstalled the older version linked above, and JOY!

SP games are loading normally, in about a minute or so. I was also able to host an MP game. So far, so good. Phew!

Thanks everyone for your suggestions! Much more helpful than 2K or steam support. (I'll let them know about it so they can help others stuck in our shoes, and perhaps Avast as well.)

Advice from someone on the Avast forums:

Yep you need to exclusions main steam directory into the Avast File System Shields

No worries on that side.
A new game takes at least 5 minutes to start. But now, impossible to run a backup.

I uninstalled "avast", but nothing changes.

The loading time issue is definitely an avast issue. Starting the computer without avast loaded restored normal loading times; I tried just turning off the real-time shields module within avast, but still got mega-loading times. Switched to Microsoft Essentials, normal loading times restored!

well, for me, old avast = no problem. I haven't tried putting steam in the exclusion folder thing; possibly that might work too.

OK Avast is uninstalled during new instalation got this .. Steam.exe(main exception):ERROR: delete of steam.exe failed, Win32 Error 5 "Access is denied."

AVG could be the problem?

Back before I even installed Steam, I read that AVG + Steam = :(

:king: Well how about this, this morning other family units have already used the machine when I get there.. hmm steam is running as well as windows, no errors this time it asks me to logon (I comply) seems to work, let's install Civ V, seems to work, now the dreaded update.. it works, it works, it finally freaking works and seems to be a little faster then before. All this with AVG runnin loun n'd proud in the backround:goodjob:

Had this problem too. Uninstalling avast and re-installing Civ 5 solved it for me.

Any recommendations of a decent (and free) virus scanner that won't break civ 5? I'm using Microsoft security essentials until I find something better.

The problem with Avast is with the latest version (6.0.1203). With that version most Steam games (atleast the ones I have) runs very sluggish, slowly or doesn't start at all. It seems only to affect winXP sp3.

To solve this and still have antivirus protection do the following:

- Uninstall avast
- Install an older version of Avast (6.0.1091 works for me). You can find the download here: http://www.filehippo.com/download_avast_antivirus/
- make sure not to upgrade the program until Avast has fixed the issue, we can hope it'll be in the next version. Downloading new virusdatabase and engine is ok though.
- ofc you can always install another antivirus instead if you have no strong affection to Avast.
