ini file and screen resolution?

i am setting up civ and conquest on a new laptop. i remember years ago when i first put in on my computer modifying a file called .ini-tweaking how the game played. here is the link

i cannot find the ini file on the new computer. do you have to make it yourself? i cannot remember.

i have a 17 in screen running windows vista with 2 gig of RAM. the current resolution is 1440 X 900. it seems the graphics are stretched a little. is there a better rate to put it at?

Nope, you don't have to add it.

I had to edit someone's civ with Vista once, very confusing :???:

Anyways, it will be near the top of the civ folder

Try adding the KeepRes=1 to your ini, see if that helps.

And if the files isn't there, just create it. Doesn't matter what order the entries are in, or if there are some missing. The game will fix it.

He's asking where the INI file is

It won't exist if a game hasn't been started. He'll need to create it. As for it's location, the same directory as the game.

I have the same problem on a Vista machine. (See my post about missing "Saves" folder.) I figured that one out, but now I wanted to adjust resolution and I am in the same boat as you - and that boats name be VISTA! No .ini file to be found ANYWHERE on my computer.

Unfortunately, I've scoured mt HDD like I did for the Saves folder, but this time came up with NOTHING!! Weird, weird, just weird. I've experienced glitched before in computing and such, but this is just odd.

I'll check again and report back if I find anything..

UPDATE.

Ok I tried again, and while I am still scrathing my head, I have had success!
MUST be a Vista thing.

I searched again. A real stripped down search, because prior search od specifically "civilization3.ini" came up with nada.

I opened up the real thorough search thing in VIsta, and searched for ".ini"

Location, I chose "everywhere"

ALSO I checked off the box on the left that says "include all non indexed, hidden, etc..."

After a couple minutes it found the file in a folder I did not know even existed. (Forget the name) Doesnt matter though,; From this screen "CUT" the file, back out of search, then navigate to your Civilization 3 Directory. "PASTE" the elusive file inside the Civ 3 folder, and you should be all set! GOOD LUCK! Lemme know if you find it.


I guess this file, in Vista, is for some reason some sort of "hidden" file, much like my Saves folder was. Makes no sense. I have had no other problems like this at all with other games, even other older games, on this Vista machine. But having ran Civ 3 problems free for years on my XP desktop, it MUST be some sort of odd Vista thingamadoodle.

Vista definitely has odd twists. The location of the the .ini file as well as the location of the Saves folder is in C:\Users\username\Local Settings\Application Data\VirtualStore\Program Files\Infogrames Interactive\Civilization III. Unless you have changed your file set up to show you all the hidden and system folders and files, you won't find it. Also, if you try taking the direct path listed above, Vista will tell you that you don't have access. For chuckles and giggles and I imagine security, the Local Settings folder has Deny checked for List folder/read data in the permissions for Everyone.

BTW: one more file in for CIV3PTW, I found and edited the ptw.ini folder for screen resolution adding Video Mode=1280 but it didn't change the screen resolution. Any thoughts?

Vista makes you hunt for options that used to be easily found. Supposedly, hiding so many things makes Vista more secure. I think it just makes it harder for the normal user to use their computer and creates more exploitable twists for the hackers and crackers.

I tried all of this(with windows 7, presario cq57 compaq) and still having problems. KeepRes=1 and Video Mode=1280 and still problems. The screen sort of jolts to the bottom corner mostly

Are you running the program as administrator?
