Initial City

Has anyone, besides me, ever considered moving their capital for reasons other than they lost the first? For instance, if once you start expanding, you find a better site than your original capital, would you build a palace there?

Yes, many times.
For site specification reasons to include keeping Capital centrally located, which cuts corruption and makes reinforcements easier.

Dogberry,

generally speaking I am much more willing to move my capital to optimize trade in a single player game, I am less so inclined to do so when opposed by another player, as the margin for error is narrowed significantly, and time screwing around with palace building can cost me the game.

Any comment I make, for anybody that cares, is multiplayer.
I don't even think in terms of A.I.'s.
Just for the record.

This is a good thread.. so I thought that I would post here.. & give it a little more life at the "top". Many interesting things are stated... although not always directly.

On places with good food & production suply ,preferebaly alongside a river. It is very inportant that you have good production potential in the beginning. Most of the time ,my first 5 cities have a coal or iron suply ,or silk and bizons ,and this in grasland area. That way, i can fastly build new setler so i can rapidly expand and build irrigations/roads for those 5 cities. After building 2 setlers each with this 5 beginning cities (these setlers i use for setteling new cities ,other smal cities later suply setlers for cultivation of the core 5 cities) and building mines on the coal/iron ,i can use them to build wonders. I Never put my first cities in an only grassland area,Because then youre cities grow faster than they can pruduce improvements for happiness. These 5 cities are always the most important, beause they produce faster than they grow ,so you have time left to build units in these cities.

If I am reading TheDuckofFlanders' later portions right..it also illustrates a common failing that I see.. at least as far as the initial set of cities is concerned.

Sometimes new players are far too picky in their city selections.. It is nice for every city to have a special or two.. but the most important thing is to get them founded & producing stuff..lots n'lots of it. You have the time to be choosy when playing the AI..but do you have it when others are involved ?

Founding new cities on instead of by rivers.. not only gives you an extra trade arrow..it also gives your fledgling empire better internal communications..both by normal roads ( functioning as a bridge ) & by use of the river itself.

Hi, RMeigs,
Nice to see you arround. Have you find someone for your new tribe?

Back to the topic: yes, I did it before. Move the capital to a better position, generally my super science city, to avoid corrpution. The cost of building a capital is not much more than building a court- house, plus it works better.

Back to the original question:
If I see a grape, I'll consider put my 1st city on it. espacially when there are grass and forest near by.

Compare to slowwhand's forest/silk/river, hill/grape/river give 1 more food, 50% more defence bonus, about similar trade(?), although less shield. It's a better choice in 1x product.

The best thing too do is to build the first city directly on the first turn..

There is no "best" location for a capitol and no major rule (like for every question in civ). because every game, every map is new and (mostly) random.
there should be an other strategy for every starting pos.
if i see no recource or a hut i walk a bit. the same if i can explore a river. i walk maximum 3 turns. my personal favourite is to found near a whale. silk or gold is also fine. so u can invent new tech in 2 or 3 turns at the beginning. if i have the choice to found on a river or near a recource, i take the recource.
but the different recources need different strategies at the beginning. if there is a shield recource like buffallo i found on it or a forrest. so u can build 2 settlers without enough food. (if u build settlers in youre capitol and u have no other cities it will be not destroyed, its called "settler factory"). then u start growing with 3 cities. if u got bananas or birds u should build exploring units and if the city grows up to size 3 settlers. same if u got a whale or fishes. if u have the choice its always better to found on a river or recource. but the first city i would not build on gold (or u have enough shields on another field for a settlers factory).

uh what a long posting... sorry if i bored u
