Hi,

I have never been able to play the game because it shuts down at the "Init Graphics" stage as a new game loads. When I enabled logging, this is the message I got:

[610362.421] ERR: InitWinApp() failed, exiting

Can anyone enlighten me as to what this might mean and how I could go about fixing it? Any help is appreciated!

I am also having this problem on my copy of Civ 4 Complete when trying to run warlords.

My comp specs:
Windows x32 XP Professional Service Pack 2
Intel E8500 Core 2 Duo @ 3.16GHz, 3.17GHz
3.25 GB of DDR3 RAM
EVGA 9800 GTX+ Video card

Clicking Warlords starts the process for about 10 seconds then terminates, with the log stating:
[122631.843] ERR: InitWinApp() failed, exiting
[122631.875] ERR: CIV Init FAILED, exiting

PS. Sorry if it's frowned appon here to bring up an old thread but I didn't see any rules against it and the problem from what I've seen is almost, if not, identical.

XP is not updated because SP2 is the most secure version of the OS. In regards to the warlords patch, I am unable to initiate the install of the patch as I get an error message saying that warlords is NOT installed despite the fact I see the icon and most if not all of the files in the directory look correct. Also there is no dxdiag file in the warlords directory.

Here is a screen shot of what I see in the warlords folder:

I would have issues with regarding sp2 as the safest - but that is up to you.
dxdiag is not a file in the warlords install - its a windows utility - click start- click run -type dxdiag -hit enter - save the results - attach the file to a post.

However the way you describe it its likely that the installation failed for some reason. Is this an administrator account on which you installed?

the administration account is the only account on this comp, there is no reason to have others.

the below is a reinstall guide for BtS - however it does also apply to Warlords (just ignore all the bts stuff and install the 2.13 and 1.74 patches for civ4 and warlords in the end (get them from the downloads database here and do not patch Civ4 to 1.74 before installing warlords).

install the most recent version of DirectX 9c from Microsoft

then do the following for a clean reinstall:

Uninstall and Reinstall Civ4 Warlords BtS :

Try to follow this order when doing stuff:
Use Control panel to uninstall Beyond the Sword, then Warlords, then Civ4
Delete "...\documents and settings\<username>\my documents\my games\sid meier's civilization 4" manually
Delete "...\documents and settings\<username>\my documents\my games\warlords" manually
Delete "...\documents and settings\<username>\my documents\my games\beyond the sword" manually
Delete "...\documents and settings\<username>\application data\my games\sid meier's civilization 4" manually
Delete "...\documents and settings\<username>\application data\my games\warlords" manually

Delete "...\documents and settings\<username>\local settings\application data\my games\sid meier's civilization 4" manually

(note: application data is a hidden directory so you need to configure windows explorer to show hidden files, also these directories in application data are sometimes removed by the uninstall routine)
Delete "...\Program Files\InstallShield Installation Information\{CFBCE791-2D53-4FCE-B3FB-D6E01F4112E8}" (Civ4)
Delete "...\Program Files\InstallShield Installation Information\{3E4B349F-10B5-4586-9D99-489A90A8B228}" (Warlords)

(note: InstallShield Installation Information is a hidden directory so you need to configure windows explorer to show hidden files).
Install Civ4, immediately patch it to 1.61 (download it fresh from here)
Install Warlords, immediately patch it to 2.08 (download it fresh from here)
Install Beyond the Sword, immediately patch to 3.19 (download it fresh from here).

i tried this way many times...but i got the same error
I still have this message after many tries of installing/unistalling

[122631.843] ERR: InitWinApp() failed, exiting
[122631.875] ERR: CIV Init FAILED, exiting

My system : Asus A6VM Intel pentium (R) 1.73Ghz RAM 1,00 GB
Windows XP service pack 3 NVIDIA GeForce Go 7300

I have latest verson of directx and latest verson of nvdia drivers

Any new ideas ?

I am getting the same error. Vanilla and Warlords work, but not BTS.

I have an HP Pavilian 1.59 GHZ with 4GB RAM
Windows XP SP3 NVIDIA GeForce 7500 LE

How can I fix it?

Yes it is patched. I am sorry - what is the dxdiag results file. Do you mean directx.log file or the init.log file?

I did go to Microsoft web page and download the latest directx files

OK It got magically fixed. I did another complete uninstall, but this time I spent a good hour scrubbing the registery. Then I installed AGAIN! It is now working again, hopefully it will last - these complete uninstalls get tiring after awhile.

Didn't see a resolution here. . . Hope you can help as I love the game but simple cannot keep it stable. It will load, and run for a period of time then freeze, two operating systems, 9 complete reloads, two hard drives and a video card later it is the same. . . once it is done freezing it exits and I get this.

Please don't tell me to uninstall and reinstall as I am way beyond that and have done a complete (and I mean complete new motherboard and HD ) reinstall several times so it is not that. I could possibly have a patching issue however I appear to have all patches to 3.19.

Same issue XP SP2, Vista, and now Win7 64bit

Game is BTS 3.19 with ALL previous patches downloaded and installed in order
RTW is Ultimate edition (Hilter version)

yes it occurs in both modded and un-modded but it takes significantly longer for it to occur in un-modded mode.
