Inside Gamer - new Interview with Jon Shafer, some new info!

I see a boat! Navies are confirmed. :p

I copy in this part by google-english:

"Ships, under a somewhat overlooked in previous Civilization games, apart from the discovery of a continent to another as quickly as possible to colonize. What happens to them? Shafer: "Any ship can carry Civilization V units. In this way, the more attractive for you to focus on building a large fleet. "Besides the ability to get ships ranged attacks to perform, such as archers and catapults. "It may be that they are five or six boxes can shoot well," says Shafer as he portrays with his hands, "which is really a great distance." Ships have so much more interesting to use or even the focus to impose when playing Civilization V."

I think he mentioned about a game being 2500 hexes across or something like that.

In order to close the interview properly, we have a bouncer. Om onze oosterburen met hun obsessie voor zinloze cijfers nog maar eens te persifleren wordt met een zwaar Duits accent gevraagd: “How many hexagons are in zee game?” Shafer antwoordt zonder blikken of blozen: “Ligt er aan hoe groot de kaart is, het kunnen er wel 2500 zijn.” De interviewer zit met zijn mond vol tanden en er valt een stilte. To our eastern neighbors with their obsession with meaningless figures only once persifleren with a heavy German accent asked: "How many hexagons are at sea game?" Shafer replied without batting an eyelid: "Is it how big the card, the there may be 2500. "The interviewer sits with his mouth full of teeth and there's a pause. De aanstekelijke lach van Shafer begint: “Dat had je niet verwacht hè, dat ik daar een antwoord op zou hebben?” The infectious laughter of Shafer begins: "You had not expected is not it, that I would have an answer?"
The translation was painful to read but it seems interesting.

also, there are words on city attck, huh, not that clear English (yes, google):

"If you only one unit per tile and can place a city completely surrounded, what happens when you try to build a new unit? And how can you defend properly then the whole thing? Shafer also laughs, nods as understandable and replies: "If you are bold in that situation, you have already lost the battle and probably the war already" Shafer adds: "What you'll find at some point is that, if you risk losing a city, include and not let yourself enter the city while the rest of the troops returning to another city to defend that."

I would hazard a guess the "Any ship can carry Civilization V units" is Google translator's famous 'getting it back to front' problem. My guess (and has been semi-confirmed in other previews) is that "Any Civilization V unit can become a ship".

I wouldn't really trust a translation till read by a native. I've already Skyped a Dutch person to read the article and comment on it.

and:

"units in the field automatically completed with reinforcements...
It's only new men who complement your units, which is obviously faster if they are within your own border. It is a well-functioning mechanism of the game, not extra burden that you also need to consider"

ANY ship can carry units? WTH? A battleship carrying tanks? A destroyer harboring an army? Is he insane?

Maybe each ship can carry one unit (and one unit only). Anyway, we need clarifying information or a translation from someone who knows the languages before we reach any conclusions (tentative or otherwise).

Best regards,
Steven.

ah, eh :)

what is this 2500 then?

Wouldn't know... 50x50 would be 2500, but that would be way too small for a civ map...
The question is: "How many hexagons are at sea game?"... Shafer replies: "Is it how big the card, the there may be 2500"
They could refer to just sea hexagons... and Shafer replies that it depends on how big the map is... there may be 2500 (sea hexagons).

Better to wait for someone that can actually speak the language and translate for us.

Where are all the dutchmen in this forum? Outside on the pitch trying to play football?
Since such an endeavour is unsuccessful anytime in the Netherlands try to translate instead :D

The question is about, what will happen when you'r city is completly surrounded and you try to build new units, concerning the 1 unit per tile rule.
Shafer answers, if you see your going to lose a city, you'll learn to pull back your units to defend another city instead of becoming trapped.

It says any ship can carry units, and that probably late game, ships can shoot up to 6 tiles far. the same way as archers can.

Map sizes can be up to 2500 tiles larges.

all in all the interview doesnt tell a lot more than this.
