...Must I uninstall previous patches (which I assume means uninstalling the game, then reinstalling), as has been mentioned, or can I just install 1.21 straight up?

You can install 1.21f right away. No need to uninstall old ones....

In case you want to go back you can do this (if you have enough HD):
make a copy of your entire CivIII folder named e.g. OldCivIII or whatever.
install patch
if you don`t like it, uninstall patch, previous patches, CivIII
reinstall civIII, previous patches.
copy backup over new CivIII folder
that way you get all the grafix packs and whatever as they were before and you surely won`t run into compatibility trouble

I also use 1.16 and am not sure about 1.21f. I use Marlas map and have made changes to the map file and would like to know if I install 1.21 will those changes be lost and if so can I change the new bic. file under 1.21? I heard you can NOT do this all changes will be lost and you can not change the new .bic file or even if you user Marlas map you can not get the actula starting positions,is this true?
