Today my new Civ 4 Complete dvd arrived. Addicted to building wonders as I am, I wanted to install the game immediately. Few seconds later.. Error:

At times I get errors like 5001, 5006, 5009 - but always after getting one of the errors mentioned above ( _is.....exe)

My computer: 64bit AMD with Vista (32)

Now... I know my computer can run Civ 4, it has been in the past. My BTS disc was cracked. I tried a nocd crack, but that didn't work. So I purchased the complete version to also get warlords.

To avoid any issues, I uninstalled all civ 4 games before my first installation. After running into the error and researching the problem, I searched and deleted all civ related files on my computer, cleaned the registry, deleted the installshield entries. Even moved the installshield directory to a different drive.... still nothing
I also updated my video drivers and directx, not expecting too much from it but well.. figured I could at least try.

The error doesn't show on an XP machine, so it is not the dvd. I am pretty much convinced it is an installshield issue. But I have no idea how to solve it?

I'd very much appreciate any help or ideas... civ withdrawal is tough, very tough

you'll probably need to manually delete the files installshield installs in its own directory - I'll dig them out and post them tomorrow. In the meantime:
the 500x:xxxxxxxxx errors are the informative ones - you might want to post them here (including the string after the : )

Thanks for your time and effort Ori :)
It's time for me to go to bed, but I will try a few installs and see what all it comes up with. By heart I remember 5001, 5006, 5009. But I'll be sure to add those strings.

Civ4 installation files are located in C:\Program Files\InstallShield Installation Information\{CFBCE791-2D53-4FCE-B3FB-D6E01F4112E8}. Delete those first

Thank you GVBN :) I already did that, though. Sorry for not mentioning that specificly.

Ori (or anyone else for that matter) :

I initiated 13 installs. This resulted in the following errors :

_is74B8.exe
_is3895.exe
error -5001 : 0xffffec75
_isE51C.exe
_is5B65.exe
error -5001 : 0xffffec75
_is1484.exe
error -5001 : 0xffffec75
_isCOD1.exe
error -5001 : 0xffffec75
_is80C6.exe
error -5001 : 0xffffec75
error -5006 : 0x8000ffff

Hope this information means more to you than it means to me... I very much do appreciate the time and effort you take to help me out :)

try the following:
uninstall the game in the control panel - if it did write itself in there (I doubt it).
rename
C:\Program Files\InstallShield Installation Information\ to something like
C:\Program Files\InstallShield Installation Information_old\ (you'll need some of the directories in there later - but I have no clue which ids complete uses...
rename C:\Program Files\Common Files\InstallShield\ to
C:\Program Files\Common Files\InstallShield_old\
delete your temporary files (click start -> run -> type %temp% -> delete everything in the directory that opens)
Then reinstall
regardless of whether that worked or not you'll have to copy all the contents of
C:\Program Files\InstallShield Installation Information_old\
into the newly created
C:\Program Files\InstallShield Installation Information
if its has not been created just rename the backup.
There is another possibility that involves reinstalling a new installshield version but I hope they included the right stuff on the complete dvd...
IF this worked you can simply delete
C:\Program Files\Common Files\InstallShield_old\
since it created a new
C:\Program Files\Common Files\InstallShield\
if not you'll probably want to rename it back.

Unfortunately that didn't work either. I am considering reinstalling vista, but I'm not sure that would work (since I basicly removed all links to civ and disabled any installshield entry? And really don't feel like reinstall and reconfigure everything.

You mentioned reinstalling a new installshield version? The one on the dvd is version 12.0.0.58851 (ISSetup.dll).

ok.. I was assuming that this version 12 would have a matching directory starting with 12. ermm.. browsing to there I notice all of a sudden there is an extra installshield dir I did not see before. So trying to install, again. And now it does start installing the game. YAY. And odd at the same time.

I did do a system recovery, going back to 2 days ago. That made stuff worse, so I went back to the latest version. Somehow that seemed to help everything *still confused*

Now there is a CRC error: warlords\bink8780.rra doesn't match the file in the setup's .cab file

Oh well, at least I somehow managed to get past the installshield problem. I guess I will start looking for a solution to my new problem .

Thanks Ori ! And GVBN too :)

And now it is back to the same problem again .. installshield errors.. *pissed*

edit: I also found out I cannot install any other games anymore. Same errors ( error 5001)

Maybe it is down to a shaky DVD?

If you got the room for it on your HD you could try copying the entire DVD into a seperate directory and run install from there.

Btw, have you checked for Adware/Virus?

I ended up deciding it was a problem I could not solve, mostly because I was unable to find any solutions on the internet. So I got rid of vista and installed xp64. Amazing how quickly the good looks of vista grow on you, but anyway...

That solved the problem, Civ and everything else works fine. Thanks for your time and effort to help me out, everyone. I really do appreciate it!
