Internet Cartoons

My friends and I were inspired by the Homestarruner cartoons, being made by only two bored college students, and we thought we'd like to make internet cartoons ourselves. My brother, Lord Paul on this site, has a funny (though somewhat demented) humor, and we'd like to upload his humor to the worldwide web. My other friend's internet service allows him one free website for a month, though I'll have to find out the details about this.

I checked out the latest version of Macromedia Flash on the internet and found that it costs.... wait for it.... $500!

But I've also found Macromedia Flash 4, from the late '90's, on ebay for something like $18. I'm considering buying it and using it to make our cartoons. However my questions to you guys is...

1. Will Flash 4 movies be visible to those with modern readers?

2. Can you think of a more modern application for animation that 3 teens with allowances can afford?

3. Can you upload Flash 4 movies on the internet?


That's all. I figured some of the computer gurus on this site could answer me. Wish us luck!

Flash 4 is usable afaik. You would need some webspace to attach the movies to I suppose. There are lots of free webspace around - and some of them arent terrible as well. (Go get something without popups, banners etc)

1=yes, why wouldnt it be?
2=not really
3=yes, normal way is to use an FTP client. And yes - there are very good free clients for that. And yes - you need to have a webaccount with ftp access.

I think that modern Flash viewers are backward compatible, so if you use Flash 4, people will be able to see it. On the other hand, Flash 4 is so pathetically limited compared to MX, or even Flash 5, that it is not worth $18 these days. I would recommend looking on ebay for at least Flash 5, which is not so bad compared to MX.

Thanks! I just bought Flash 4 on Ebay for $20.

IbnSina, I couldn't find Flash 5 for anything less than $150, so it's no go.

BTW, I think I've found a good service for web hosting/domain names, so when we make the cartoons I think we're going to make it!

If we ever get this thing going I'll post a link in Humor and Jokes. Beware though, it'll be more of a demented cartoon movie style humor.
