I'm trying to help my brother reformat his drive and reinstall windows.

Everything is working fine, windows is up and running and some software has been installed and is working fine.

The problem is the internet connection. One of the errors we've been getting is

"Failed to query Tcp/Ip settings of the conection cannot proceed."

I've googled it, but need a more 'user friendly' explanation of what i need to do. I've tried installing all of the drivers, and downloading updated drivers but nothing seems to work.

Are you trying to pull down a dhcp reservation or are you manually assigning an IP address?

lol, I don't know what either of those mean. We have a a 2wire router that we plug our cables into, and the internet is always on. Like right now my laptop is able to connect through the same router.

Kinda hard to say without access to your network.

I would go to Start -> Control Panel -> Network Connections. Right-Click the Local Area Connection, and selete properties. Find the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) option in the middle of the dialog box where it says "This connection uses the following items:". Click that and select Properties on the buttons below the box. You'll then see several options. The top one will be "Obtain an IP address automatically". Click on the "Use the following address" and put int 192.168.1.XXX, where XXX is a number between 0 and 255. You can probably put about any number in there and it won't conflict with any other IP address. Okay, the first set should be 192.168.1.whatever, the second set of boxes should be 255.255.255.0, and the last set should be your router gateway, which is probably 192.168.1.254. You can test that by going to IE on the laptop, and in the address bar putting in 192.168.1.254. You can also put in 192.168.1.254 in the "Use this Address" under the DNS button on the bottom of the page.

I really appreciate your trying to help, but he worked it out by himself. He called dell support and now he's back online making lolcats (or whatever he does)

Thank you, sorry for wasting your time, with something he could have done long ago with a simple phone calle.

Plus still can't hurt to learn.

I asked him how he fixed it, and he actually didn't install the necessary driver from the Dell Driver CD that came with his computer.

During the installation process, a list of drivers and detected drivers appear on the list, and the detected drivers have a check mark, so he thought he only had to install the drivers with a check. The one he needed was there though (but without a check mark)

Thanks for the support!
