Haha, im sure someone else has this problem, but i can assure you i missed it, and my impatience makes me stubborn and... yea.
I've hit a weird wall.
I get the game up with directx 10/11 and the intro goes smoothly, i was like oh yes!, but then it struck, intro passed and i could hear music but nothing popped up. no start screen nata, just intro to ...blank? anyone else seen this or have any ideas?

I have the exact same problem. The workaround is to go into the Civ 5 configuration files (DirectX11.ini, if memory serves), look for a line that mentions full screen mode, and change it from 1 to 0 to force it to run in windowed mode.

This.

Somewhat annoying having to run in windowed mode, but hopefully a fix will be available soon.

What vid cards do you guys have?

I have this same issue as many people. Very annoying and reminded me of why I switched to console games quite a few years back (tho, I love Civ so I had to get this).

Anyway, I can run in windowed mode but can't see all the bottoms of the overlays screens. I would prefer to play in fullscreen to have the full effect of the game.

My specs:
Vid: Nvidia 285GTX
Win 7 64 bit
Core i7
6gb ram.
wide screen monitor

Hope they have a patch very soon!

A Radeon HD5570, driving a 1080p HDTV.
Edit: Windows 7 x64, 6 GB RAM, all driver and OS updates are current as of last night.

Running in windowed mode isn't perfect, because for some reason the game thinks the display is set to 720p (it isn't; it's running at 1920x1080), so some of the interface gets clipped off at the bottom. It's playable, but annoying. Trying to switch to full-screen using the in-game options menu doesn't work either; it detects the screen resolution correctly, but when you try to switch, you only get about 1/4 of the options screen, stretched out across the full size of the display.

I'd like to have an exact description and a confirmation from soneone else, that it works.

Thanks for the link.

Does it work for anyone else?

yes per my post above, it worked for me to play in windowed mode by changing the ini file for directx 11. I still await a patch so I can have full screen/full resolution though.

I could play it but am missing some of the bottom parts of the layover screens (seems like the 'ok; buttons, but I can hit 'esc' and the overlays go away).

There's a detailed description by someone on the 2K games forum:

Though the steps 4 & 5 (changing back to full-screen mode inside the game) didn't work for me; I had to stay with windowed mode.

Exactly.
The force to Window's mode worked, but the steps to return it to normal didn't.
Definitely missing info around the screen.
Had a devil of a job agreeing to Gandhi's offer of a research pact..

The recent patch fixed the issue for me. Full-screen works fine now in DX11 mode; I haven't tried DX9.
