Um... ok?

I'm going with Westeros.

This is my map so far. I just outlined the Seven Kingdoms to give some of the borders, but I'll add a lot more provinces. It's 1840x3600, so be careful.

Quick question: would the 6ish people I expect to play rather have a game influence by the A Song of Ice and Fire lore (series Westeros is from. READ IT.), or just use the map as a canvas for new and random provinces and have modern troops?

Basically, I'm asking if y'all want aircraft or medieval pseudo-fantasy.

I probably won't play, but I would kinda prefer fantasy. And who knows, I might.

Bought Game of Thrones recently, BTW. Hate it already and I just got through the first bit. Maybe it'll get better as I progress, but I feel cheated. I was just starting to get in tune with Will's character and like it and Martin kills him off. I never like that.

Heads up: every Prologue POV character is gonna die. It sets the tone for the books, but trust me, even though there's sad moments, they're balanced out by the happy. Jon Snow, Daenerys, and Tyrion Lannister are just such great characters, the three of them are basically half of why the series is so awesome. Also, Littlefinger. I don't want to reveal anything, but really, pay very close attention to him.

Here's my idea:

Each player claims 1-4 (depending on how many players) provinces with a white circle, then they place their faction's color(s) in the circle (may use borders for circle). The provinces would have to be either touching or in the same sea zone. I tried to put the circles closest to the main castle or city in the province, but some provinces have features I can't remember or place. It's not really important.

The game would work sort of like Iron and Blood. Armies will be in a pool and navies real. If you control an entire region, you get a bonus corresponding to the location. For example, Highgarden (light green place) would get a big income bonus (farms/plantations will replace factories), but if you control the Iron Islands (yellow islands) you would get a moderate bonus to naval power (the Ironmen are the best sailors, sea fighters, and pirates in Westeros, but because there are only 4 provinces, I need to nerf it some). NOTE: I may make the Ironmen an NPC faction so they don't get swiped at the start of the game. And besides, I need someone to play around with when the fighting breaks out. :p

Now, some of you probably noticed that in the North (white) and the Crownlands (gold), the circles aren't white. This is to represent the important NPCs. The Wildlings in the North want to get past the Wall, and probably won't unless a player attacks the Night's Watch (the guards of the wall). This could mean that those in the immediate area will get attacked, and may or may not be very bad for every player in the game depending on the Wildlings' successes and other factors. King's Landing and the Kingswood are owned by the King of Westeros, who sits upon the Iron Throne of Westeros. The Iron Throne is the ultimate goal of every player. Claiming it will cause a civil war involving lots of REALLY fun stuff (for me). The only way to win the game is possessing King's Landing and being at peace, but first you would have to kill the current king, as well as anyone who supports him. If you want to claim the throne, you need to know that there will be a chance for rebellion in each of your provinces and the King has some large armies (not cannon, but meh). You also will need one of the Seven Kingdoms (can be either you or you and one ally).

Every turn, I'm going to roll a D100. If it's 96 or above, the Wildlings break through. Sounds safe, right? Well, on top of that, the number (96) will decrease by 4 each turn. The only way to counteract this is to donate armies to the Night's Watch, which will increase the number by 2. It is possible to raise the number above 100, which will cause no roll to be made that turn (100% chance of safety).

So, to sum it up, I'm the gold guys you want to defeat, white guys are bad news, the Wall keeps them out, and you all need to read A Game of Thrones.

Book looks interesting. While its something that sounds worth reading down the road, I don't plan to read it anytime soon (I have a lot of other stuff to do ATM.)

I would play the game potentially, depending on how much knowledge of the book is necessary. If you gave us the necessary knowledge in something that could be read quickly (I can read fast, so this could still be somewhat long, but not an entire novel) I'd play.

I'll probably provide enough info, but if I say anything weird, you can just ask me what I mean.

Also, right now, there are 4 books in the series. The one he's been doing for 5 years, A Dance with Dragons, is being released July 12, and 2 more are planned. The books keep getting bigger and bigger, too. The most recent one had 1100 pages in the paperback edition.

Sounds like he's Feisting it. That's too damn long for any book, and too long to be working on it either.

For reference, Raymond E. Feist is on about his 30-40th book in Riftwar. He Jumped the Shark about 25-35 books ago. Shortly after that I stopped reading.

For TLP, I have a strict plan and won't be going on forever and ever. Trilogy, trilogy on Earth, then tetrology that wraps all this up, then on to a new project.

Anywho, you kinda can count me out. I don't have the time or the interest.

I've heard that was originally just half the book as well...

Yeah, I don't have time for that ATM. While I'm a fast reader, I have a hard time getting through a super-long book, especially if the wording is complex. While I can get through a 500-700 page book easily (And within a day or two if I want too), I have a hard time getting through really long books like LOTR.

I'm not doing it now, dude. I think I'm going to wait till June 10th-ish, unless people want me to start it sooner. I'd prefer to do it during summer, but whenever is fine.

That's the only book GRRM took 5 years on. The other three were 1-2 years. During the 5 years he wrote some other novels and novellas. It's not that he's a slow writer, it's he's about as focused a writer as a toddler when he's not writing. Also, he hasn't jumped the shark yet.

I don't know, I'll most likely have ZERO availability from July 2nd to July 10th, and very limited availability for the rest of July and Early August, though the latter depends on when we go to Florida (We're still not certain of when we're going) and the former depends on other things, but I'll probably have no access.

Realpolitik 2 is unlikely to end this year. RP1 lasted about ten months.

Ergo, considering how insane it is, I might be able to play ONE IOT. However, I'd want to pick that one VERY carefully so it's one I actually care about. And ASOIAF isn't going to be that. Sorry.

Would that one be the realpolitik IOT?
Which may be coming shortly after nemidnapolean finishes the map...

I know what you mean. I had to do all those white spots twice because Gimp was like "lulz no" when I pressed ctrl+s.
