IOT Developmental Thread

In theory any territory you get from claims or trading the air space will come with it, however you can close your air space (just like straights) to restrict trade and access to unfriendly nations, how ever in war you can loose control of an air space by attacking it with fighter squadrons. Air unites will work like an amalgam of wmds and army/navies, the base level air unites you can build right of the bat is Piston Fighters and dive bombers, however with funding you can build Jet Fighters, Strategic bombers, Stealth Fighters, Stealth Bombers, and Multi role aircraft(air units that can both attack air spaces and attack armies, but doesn't excel at ether).

any thoughts on this?

Hmmm, if IOT Rev II starts as a sequel to IOT Rev do we get to keep our countries?

Any NPCs and nations surviving at the end of IOT Rev (or at least, when the 28th comes around since I won't close Rev until its dying) will be transported over to IOT Rev II. The NPCs can be taken over and renamed of course and any player who wishes to start a new nation or doesn't want to come over to IOT Rev will just have their nation collapse to make room for other players.

The WMDs will be ported over as well, as well as armies and fleets. But because there's now a maintance cost on armies and fleets (and nuclear/biological WMDs), I'm going to allow the ported-over nations adjust the size of their stockpiles, army size, and navy size accordingly so they don't bankrupt the first turn. That's because over the course of the game, only one army, one fleet, one WMD, one factory, etc. can be decommissioned a turn unless the player declares bankruptcy.

I think Rev two should have air spaces and air units.

I was actually toying around with the idea of aircraft carriers. Also, I think I'm going to drop the "tech" tree and just increase the cost of WMDs and, to be nice, get rid of the +1% thing I'm doing for IOT Rev.

I would need help with implementing air forces. I was actually going to do it for IOT Rev but I don't know enough about planes to decide if there should be squadrons or wings or what (because I don't know). Oh, navies will be renamed "fleets" since that makes more since. :)

I'm not any sort of expert on aeronautics but I think I know enough about combat aircraft to help.

I know at the end of an aircraft tree would be "stealth fighters/bombers" and since the game starts in the 80s, I'm not sure I want to pull out any aircraft earlier than the 1950s. Also, I'm hesitant about having separate fighters, separate bombers, etc.

perhaps he could save bombers for Rev 3, and use generic squadrons that attack and defend from a pool like the armies and navies of this game, if air units are a hit we can advance the concept in a future game, if it's not well you never until you try.

That would be good. How does airbases sound?

Also, we now have six IOTs (yes, Sons of Mars is an IOT.

No it is not! As the maker of the first formal IOT, I invoke Founders' intent and say that SoM is not an IOT. ;)

Also, IOT is not in the name. :D

Granted, due to the IOTs' diversity, it's hard to really quantify it other than empire-building. Any Empire building game seems to be an IOT, honestly.

Air power certainly enhances power projection options. Any modern game should respect the reality and importance of air superiority, I feel.

Example: Israel has won many of its wars IRL by destroying enemy airforces, thus enabling them to freely harass ground troops. You must dominate land, sea, and air to be a true superpower. ;)

Don't forget "have ICBMs you can use to threaten everyone with."

Sounds interesting, if we include them we should be able to build them in neutral and friendly countries provided the give consent. AA Guns would be an interesting improvement that would give them some sort of defence bonus against air attacks and invasions.

A thing that worries me about all of this so far is the map. Namely how many I might need (up to three) but that will probably be mitigated so and I'll put trade routes and infrastructure on the same map, leaving AA defenses/missile silos/etc. on a "strategic" map.

Quick rundown of stuff on map:

# for infrastructure level in each province.
Red Lines to mark trade routes.
White circle to mark trade center.

On strategic map:

Square for air bases
Xs for missile silos
Triangle for Air Defenses (Missile shields (???))

I definitely think that we should start with entirely new nations for IOT Rev II with all of the new rules (BTW: Isn't this the plan if IOT Rev I is still alive?)

No. If IOT Rev I is still running when Rev II starts up, then Rev II will just "split" from that timeline to the new one and both games will run at the same time.

That would honestly be an odd thing...

Isn't IOT Rev II gonna be like 20 years later though? Wouldn't this make world borders and stuff change quite a bit?

IOT Rev II is 20 years later....20 more updates from IOT Rev I (which is in the 60s so we may actually start in the 90s)

I... hmm... well, Rev II sounds rather more complicated than Rev I, not that that's easy to manage either... so, good luck with that. ;)

It seems that way but the most time-consuming part of actually updating for IOT Rev are the casualty reports.

Besides, IOT Rev is just getting started!

Honestly then, I would probably just end Rev I when Rev II starts. I mean, Diplomacy from the previous game would just carry over anyway. And it would be really confusing to have two games going on that were essentially the same thing, and in one world I alligned with the nation I killed in the other world;)

Bah. I'll adopt a wait and see policy.

I think you should wait till there are less games going.

AA guns- if Advance Wars has taught me anything, those things work pretty well on infantry.

Bah. Maybe fortifications instead? Expensive and cost maintenance but improves defense against everything.
