My Dad wants to get a iPod.

In the last few days I have moved his much of his collection of music into iTunes.

Size 8.9gig.

We can't imagine this volume expanding considerably.

BUT I realise in Ipod terms, its quite a small volume of music.

He wants the iPod to be able to transfere his music between various locations. He is not going to be communting etc, its simply going to dock at different houses.

We are therefore looking at the cheaper end of the market.. 40gb,30gb will easily cover his collection and considerably into the future.

Its not going to be used for videos, the internet, etc, and all the other waffle newer iPods come with.

SooOooO. What generation to buy? Were some generations unreliable? charging fail? lower quality?

Please, what iPod should we eBay?

ive got a 120GB Ipod Classic, and it aint too fragile. Get a decent case for it and you're golden. I just dont suggest it for temperatures lower than 40F, it doesnt seem to like that.

Don't buy the Shuffle if you want to add music at different locations.

Secondly, when syncing, make sure you select Manual sync or it will be overwritten if you go to a different computer.

Finally, the newer iPods have to be registered to an iTunes account to buy off the iTunes store, so if you plan on buying from iTunes, you may end up being forced to buy new. (I've no personal experience of buying second hand iPods though).

My personal advice as an iPod Touch owner is: Don't buy an iPod. Buy iriver or Creative. Your paying a premium for the iPod name and if you don't want any of the features of the new iPods there's no point.

And if you buy off someone else than Apple, you can more than likely use WMP, or even better, the plain old file system, which is a big plus as iTunes is IMO, the crappest application ever made.

Thats what I meant by fragile. I've dropped mine from a height of at least 10 feet, it got a scratch and not much more. It was playing music at that moment.

UPDATE

I got one for my Birthday.

How do I get more games?
Can I use it as a calendar/organiser?

Games you need to buy from the iTunes store. Im not sure about the calendar/organizer, an iTouch would have probably suited you better for that.
