What is the iron works and how do I build it. I have'nt seen the option to produce it ?

First post

First of all, it's a Small Wonder. You can only build it in a city which has both the iron and coal resources within its city radius. So it's not possible to build in every game. In fact, I've never seen it yet either. :)

Kinght-Dragon is correct - only a city with both Coal and Iron within the city radius can build it, so it can be somewhat elusive, and since its a small wonder, only one city can build it even if you get lucky enough to have 2 or more cities with coal & iron in their radii.

The Iron Works is sort of a "super-factory." A factory increases a city's base shield output by 50%. The Iron Works increases base shield output by 100%, and the same city can still build a factory for another 50% over base. Basically, assuming that your iron-works-eligible city is not totally corrupt (far from your palace or forbidden palace) it can become a production monster. I have had an iron works city produce somewhere right around 190 shields per turn - which means any unit other than an army or a nuclear weapon (or a battleship w/coastal access) can be produced in one turn. I have seen others' screen shots with Iron Works' cities producing 225+ shields per turn.

pollution can be removed fast... iron works is such sweet wonder.
But worst thing is when advisor say "maybe we should built Iron works", it takes time to find that city that has both Iron and Coal in its radius.
More I think, it is manageable to build city if you see both iron and coal near

Thanks everybody for your posts. This is a great game and I am spending entirely too much time playing it. Oh well, at least I'm having a lot of fun!

i've never seen the IRonworks built...

So i modded it :)

made it so it would appear when a civ just has both iron and coal, not necessarily in the same city's radius. I toned it down a little to prod 3 pollution 3 but it's still better this way.

Just use the trade advisor, and look at your coal and iron. See which one is "near" the same city.

This may not work if you close-build. Press shift-ctrl-m, then zoom out. Now, you can see the resources unhindered.

Never got a chance to build one...

So... it seems like luck is a major factor to have the Iron Works built. You don't see coal until the industrial age, and all you can do is to hope for coal to appear where you love to have it... b/c you probably don't/can't create new productive cities close to the palace/FP after you see coal... Well then luck is a lot more than a major factor, since the location of resources are already set in the beginning of games... ouch.

I haven't had an Iron Works city for a long time now. Well I could have had one last game, but it would have been located in the corrupt hinterland of my conquered enemies.

I was only to build it once but I had a super-city cranking out about 150 sheilds per turn...

There is a downside. As it is a 'super-factory,' it also produces pollution.

You really cool guys make me sick!

Moderator Action: Now that's not a very nice attitude, they have their right to voice their opinions on pollution just like they have a right not to be insulted. If your post was intended as a joke, then put in some smileys man.

The Ironworks is a must have if you can build it. Hell, it's almost a gamebreaker. I've even abandoned a well established, 23 pop city (no wonders) just to make an ideal placement of a city in which to build the Ironworks.

I had that option once. I had a highly productive culturaly advanced city, in the top 5 on the world chart, and if I built the city ONE tile to the west, I would have had both iron and coal in the city radius but nope, I just had to build my city on the river with the cows. I could not disband the city because it had my forbidden palace in in and another wonder. :(

Yaniv, think before you write!
More pollution makes more tiles turn desert because of global warming - if you are on a world with ****ty territory already, you might want to think about that!

I built an iron works in only one game from the early times and slapped a city down, built the iron works with a leader but it was latter in the game.

My first iron works city, built my space ship. I think I could build the most expensive components in about 5 turns or so.

What I do when I actually have a city that can build iron work is get it started ASAP and after the iron work is finished, build the palace in that city too. This way I can get ALL the benefit of iron work and not worry about corruption.

only problem is that you lose any cultual bonus from the palace existing for a long time in your formal capital. If that does not bother you, then this may be the way to go.
