Is anyone else tired of good games and franchises getting bad sequels?

Interesting, considering most people I've talked to profess the opposite.

Hence the "I found" remark in my post and it seems im not the only one thinking that.

Sequels are almost always of a lesser quality than their originals, this goes for movies, video games, etc.

That's very often true, especially when there is sequels only to milk a franchise.
There is still quite a bit of case where the sequel is actually good, though, and sometimes even better.

Age of Empires series

Age of Empires was bad from the start. If anything, the sequels considerably improved over the original, if only because they were "less bad".

Civilization series - Revolution sucked, and from what I hear 3 and 4 do too

Bad example here. Revolution is apart of the serie, the 4 is by far the BEST one, and the 3 had several problems but was still a great game and the most immersive.
Really, you could hardly have failed more in chosing an example of bad sequels... Civilization is nearly the benchmark of the OPPOSITE...

Total Annihilation series - Kingdoms was good, but not as good as the original, and Supreme Commander/Supreme Commander 2, the spiritual successors were total failures.

TA franchise, in fact, illustrates the "sequel are worse", but you got several things wrong.
Kingdoms WAS a total failure - and deservedly sold bad.
SupCom 2 WAS even worse, and is a pile of crap.
SupCom 1, on the contrary, was FANTASTIC, and widely praised as a very special, very ambitious project. I don't know how you can call it a failure. Have you even tried it ?

Doom series - I&II&TNT&Plutonia were classics, Doom 3...well, not so classic, not so nostalgia, and not as good.

Plutonia and TNT were simply new maps, nothing interesting. Doom 3 was very well done, and is still to this day the only game that scared the crap out of me - granted, I've yet to play System Shock.

Quake series

Quake II is better than the 1 in every way, though it went downhill from there.


You're right that sequels are often worse, but many of your examples aren't the best choices to say the least.

Age of Empires 1 was meh, 2 was insanely awesome, and, while I find 3 to be meh, it's reviewed highly. So...I guess the moral of this thread is Your Mileage May Vary
