Is Artillery Overpowered?

They are definitely for the era of Industrial and early Modern... but once MGs, Bombers, Landships and Infantry start appearing, its time to move on with the bigger guns.

Definitely not sure where the "overpowered-ness" comes from - even 3 range isn't going to save your men if they are only plinking 6 damage per turn on the enemy's units!

Indeed at least add a promotion Heavy Artillery I, beginning when GW infantry are able to be built. That way your established siege units can get that for a choice after their first promotion, after that tech is researched. This would simulate the Krupp Ironworks creating artillery from 205mm and up. Fort busters! They should also add a Shrapnel I, and High Explosive I then too. To simulate the different rounds an artillery can fire. You can pick and choose between your siege units, what type of role you want them to adopt. Multi-role artillery.

I had another crazy idea where a GG could give out a certain number of role promotions to units in his radius (two hexes), depending on the Era, or he could choose to build a citadel. Role promotions specific to unit types would make things far more interesting. Of course the same choice could be made for a GA.

I think artillery was underpowered with G&K. In reality artillery is so important to shredding attacking troops, or to pound positions. In the game you need half a dozen artillery along with an attacking force just to take a well guarded position.

Yes, but it can't act that way in a game; for the sake of gameplay, I think artillery is fairly balanced. Personally, I think trebuchets should get indirect fire to make up for the huge jump from trebs to artillery.

Also, in your screenshots above. How come Napoleon did not do what the Dutch did above. The AI should have and it could have.

In my experience, the AI is a lot more aggressive than normal when it can bring forth more units than you. I've read on CIV fora that the AI sending out 40 Man O Wars was considered as a frightening and normal invasion back in Colonization... that was on a difficulty two or three ladders below Deity too. Unlike its predecessor however, CiV AI doesn't have the capacity to overbuild units unless at higher levels. Hence it gets more aggressive only from the latter point onwards.

Hence why you only get to see this sort of thing on Immortal+ too, which is probably bearable if you play on slower speeds like that fellow did

That game was played on emperor, but you should have seen the size of the army the Ottomans produced, it was unreal. Even on my game in prince they have had some sizable armies.

In any case it was not the army size in marbos game that mattered so much. The AI was just inept in its defense of its capital, and it had enough units to destroy that offensive if it had acted accordingly.

Nah, they don't. It's quite telling that AI is far more aggressive when it can quickly whip up 17+ unit formations, especially if you take into account their reduced supply and maintenance cost as the levels go up.

They didn't even build 10 airplane stacks, and worse, they were mired in some southern war as well

e: about as unreal as this?!

That plan should have never worked to begin with. You or I or anyone would have blown him to hell. But how do you program the AI to say, "Hey you fool, he is trying to bring his obsolete army next to your capital, so he can win the game?" Don't let him let him get away with that, in big bright flashing letters. What did the AI think he is over there trying to build a cabin on the lake, so he an napoleon can be serves by wenches and fish all summer?

Looks more like an aberration than anything else, if that's your issue. AIs tend to confront you about nasty intentions if you shift stuff near their borders... sometimes they just don't. I've had both kinds of incidents happen before, nothing new, part of RNG or some such. I do partially agree though - the devs have obviously programed the "Diplomatic Minefield" to counteract this sort of boogaloo... but me thinks sometimes AIs should take that chance and just DOW you anyways.

I know it seems they backstab any other time. I had a feeling in the back of my mind that marbozir would actually get away with it. But if I tried it, I doubt I'd be that lucky. I always get the shaft in my games for the most part
