Is having most points without TIME victory a good strategy?

Hmmm, i've noticed something rather strange, since I'm just really "learning" the game, I usually play on settler or Chieftain difficulty, and almost everytime everyone hates me.

But last game as Siam, I somehow managed to avoid being the person with most points (as opposed to other games where I always have 3x as much points as others.)

And in the same game where I was not the top, everyone literally kept denouncing the Arabia (who had the most points), which I found strange because then everyone was my friend, and the only person to actually be an ass was Arabia (declared war on me! and conquered two of my ally CS (Since I was going for Cultural Victory, luckily, at Chieftain, I still get the upper hand in technology and policies so I would've won no matter what (and I won) ). So..

My question is, do you tend to get more hated when you have most points? And if you don't, do they hate the person with most points or was it just a coincidence?

You always get hated if you have the highest points, on any level, because you are seen to be winning by the AI.

This can be an advantage, as the AI will then tend to DoW on you, rather than you having to DoW them. This means you are not seen as the aggressor, unless you completely wipe them out. So leave them one city (I usually leave them the smallest or poorest city).

Note that taking a CS will immediately result in you being arch enemy #1, so don't do it unless you don't need friends (are far enough ahead that it doesn't matter).

Or do it really early like with someone like Mongolia, before you meet a lot of other civs. You only get warmongering penalties for actions you do AFTER they've met you, so merely take the CS you like really quickly and the other Great Empires won't care if you did it early.

As long as you don't kill any CS, eliminate any civs, or make and declarations of friendship no one should get too upset with you until it is much too late.

also a big factor for people hating you is army size , or so it seems that way to me . If your army is weak you can become the person everyone will pick on.
