Is it a good idea to "waste" great scientists by finishing research with them when the number of beakers they provide is less than the number of beakers they can provide? In one game I want to double-bulb education but each GS gives me 1770 beakers while education costs only 2900 beakers. If I double-bulb I will be effectively "wasting" 500 beakers, but I might be able to cuir rush, say, 3-5 turns earlier (making 450 bpt at golden age). Is bulbing worth the opportunity cost of, say, an academy here?

On certain things, absolutely. If going for Lib (for instance) it's fine to double bulb education. Philosophy is another good bulb that costs less than 1 GS.

Like most things in civ 4 though, it's situational.

Duly noted.

I ended up finishing the rest of edu manually and then bulbing most of lib.
