The original CD I bought got corrupted/damaged and I went to download the same songs I paid for?

Not sure, but it does sound kind of like piracy. I dont know, I am not a lawer :p

it is so congrats.

What if you still have the damaged official legitimate CD? If you can't replace it, but count it as being 'backed up' in the form of MP3's or whatnot. It's dodgy ground IMO, but it's more legal than just downloading it without owning it.

technically you a pirate!
but AFAIK, you ARE ALLOWED to burn backup copies of software-songs you BOUGHT.
so following this logic, i would say that NO, you are NOT a pirate.

but make sure you do regular backups, so youre not "forced" to DL anything again ;)

Wow thanks for the response guys. I'm definitely not paying for the same songs again. I always thought that since I paid for the rights I can use it. Ah well, back ups for the win!

GAR! Im a pirate! I have a wooden leg! Me parrots on me shoulder! :mischief:

I dont think its piracy. I know people who have done worse (8 PC games for $80AU sounds a little dodgy if you ask me)

It's not piracy at all. You have the right to those songs, if you've purchased the CD. Just don't make them available for download when you have them (though that's bad karma)

My best friend downloads for free via piracy:
- whole seasons of anime shows and movies
- at least 20 something computer games (good ones such as Call of Duty2 and such)
- xbox games

basically anything, except its weird cause Im not really sure that he uses the piracy method for songs, I only see actually store-bought cds in his room

I have virtually no money, so I use P2P file sharing and download songs, but I mainly use it to preview bands and songs I've heard of so that I can decide if I want to go out and buy their cd, cause otherwise I would not pay $16 to buy a cd that I know only has 1 good song at the most. So by me being a "pirate", they are actually making money.

Yes.

In the same way that if your CD got corrupted/damaged and you went to the store and stole another one.

IIRC though it's not illegal to make a 'backup' copy provided it's for your own use.

I wouldn't classify it as piracy but I'm sure the lawyers would

The idea of downloading tv episodes confuses the hell out of me. my assumption is it is illegal however whats the difference between downloading an episode of a tv show, and taping it off the tv?

The PrinceofLeigh is right. So far as American copyright law goes, 'fair use' of a copyrighted work does not extend to replacing a damaged copy.

Thats why you should back up anything you care about onto a hard drive.

What do you use VCRs for in England, then?

I guess with downloading, its already on DVD format, I don't really know if he has ability to record episodes on a DVD though. But yeah, it is kinda strange. But a couple of my friends do it so Im guessing its not too uncommon.

That's one weird law, can you back that up (obviously the law varies from place to place). That's pretty much the only use for a VCR. Fair enough you can play videos that buy or make yourself. But I'm sure that nearly everyone who owns a VCR has recorded something of the television. I used to tape movies of the television and keep them 3 movie per tape. I've stopped that now mainly because of quality issues and the fact that I like DVDs
