Is it wrong to pirate a game you own 2 copies of?

I lost my first copy of BTS and went to the store and bought a new one. For the hours upon hours of enjoyment the game has given me, I can pay them another $20.
I think either way you go in this case you'll be okay considering Civ 5 is here. But as we see with Civ 5 being on steam, piracy is forcing game makers into a corner and I can guarantee pirates arent going to win.....

Well, I don't know. I want to agree, but Steam (as an example) hasn't stopped pirates from pirating games. It's easier to break into a fortress than it is to build a fortress.

Assassins Creed was pirated in 2 weeks. Civ5 in 1-2 days... DRM and "threatening with legal actions" does not stop pirates, it only restricts the actual buyers. Plus, with torrents, since everything comes from multiple sources it's hard to track who downloaded something. Proxies can also prevent one from getting caught.

And once again, there are an unlimited number of copies of a piece of software, so it is losing anyone money, you're just losing a potential amount of money the seller could make. And the ratio of buyers : pirates is not extremely significant.

It's not like if someone pirates a piece of software they're barging in someone's house and taking all their stuff.

So, to reiterate:

-It's hard to find the perpetrators
-Judging the damage done is difficult
-You could have commited a worse crime

Gosh what unsavory act couldn't this rationalizing defend?

You can argue around this issue all you want but the fact remains that there is a legal precedent against piracy, and that is sufficient motivation for a law-abiding citizen.

I know for ROMs if you own a copy of the game it's legal, otherwise you have to destroy the ROMs within 24 hours. I imagine a similar law is in place for something like Civ, and as there is no CD-keys or anything there's obviously an incentive to distribute.

Is it wrong to pirate the game that you own? Maybe, probably, I don't know.

Is it wrong to buy civ4 from D2D? Yes. :p

IMO, always go for the most standard or common version.

I agree Jerrymander, it hasnt stopped it, but you cant beat the steam system. If a ton of major games go on steam it will help curb it tremendously. At least online play.

Don't be so sure. The most successfully pirated version of Ghostbusters: the Video Game was downloaded from Steam and then packed into a self-extractor; attempts to pirate the game as a CD image were buggy.

What im saying is you CANT play a pirated game on steam, sure you can buy a game on steam and then try to rip it, but you bought it first. And when the guy, who you give it to, tries to play on Steam guess what? it wont work! its a full proof idea. They dont miss anything, trust me I have lost steam accounts for less. They dont investigate, the shut your account off and make you do the leg work to prove your innocence.

Oh wait, you were talking about multiplayer? You should have clarified.

TBS games aren't suitable for multiplay except hotseat at parties.

Come on, now. It's a well-known fact that murder is a "gateway crime" to more heinous offenses, like file-sharing and even jaywalking.

Why did you even post this in a thread? Is it only fair that you can do this? Dont care if its technically illegal. Laws shouldnt necessarily define how you act. Go right ahead and pirate it.
