This question inevitably seems to triger responses counting beakers. For me the point is philo's/SE geared HE flexibility and ease of early implementaion. That pretty much leads in a (possibly) temporary production or techs edge (or at least less of a disadvantage on the highest levels 
) .
I find financial much more dependant on the map. There always seem to beenough food to sustain the fist hand full GPs and the capitals (yours and the closest AIs ofcourse
) is a generally a good GP farm. Not every map brings enough 2 
plots for financial.
The philo trait got a boost in BTS as well in a number of ways.
But the real charming novelty are the way too good GSpies.
Pretty much the only thing i take for granted is that i just have to make 1-2
of my early GPs GSpies. Isolation or not, regardless of map etc it always pays of way too much...
And considering generating them presents equal difficulty with that of GE, philo just rocks.
