Is the Sacrificial Altar any good?

I have read the combat explained article now, and did a quick calculation of Landsknekt vs Maceman, unpromoted on a open field.

LK attacks Mace:
6 vs 8 * (1+0.5 -1)

Close. But when the total modifier drops below 0%, a different formula is used. The exact calculation:
LK attacks mace:
6 vs. 8 base. Modifiers: 0% for LK. +50% - 100% = -50% for Mace.
So
6 vs 8 / (1 - (-0.5)) = 6 vs. 5.33.

Mace attacks LK:
8 vs. 6 base. Modifiers: 0% for Mace. +100% - 50% = +50% for LK.
8 vs. 6 * (1 + .5) = 8 vs. 9.

The LK wins on average, but it's a reasonably close match; a couple lucky rolls will tilt it the other way.

It might be the most well rounded and flexible unit in the game apart from the prat, very consistently adding value in all situations.

The most well rounded and flexible unit in the game would be Red Coats, particularly those under ownership by Churchill.
