I'm still in my first game right now and already have a lot of old warriors and archers. Is there some way to upgrade them to newer units, like Leonardo's Workshop's did in Civ2?

for warriors you need iron and iron working to upgrade them to swordsmen.
for archers you need crossbow tech.
it costs gold to upgrade them.
Professional army in the honor tree, and the pentagon wonder each lower gold cost by 50%, free with both.

There is no automatic upgrade like Leonardo's Workshop, but you can reduce the gold cost (as stated above). But, you still need to have the unit inside your own borders and manually click the upgrade icon (looks like a star with stripes behind it).

Are you sure that it is free with both, and not 25%?
1*0.5*0.5 = 0.25?
I haven't tested.

That would seem broken when many old units do not seem to ever go unbuildable.

It's not free. I have the Pentagon and Professional Army in my current game, and upgrades still cost gold - not very much gold, but they're not free. You have to use VA math. ;)
