So I was dozing off, and then the [curse curse swear angst angst] neighbors on the back deck woke me up (you'd THINK they'd know better than to screech at each other at 3 AM, but nooooo!).

And for some reason or another, my body was "stuck," I couldn't move it at all, but I could still think. After a few minutes it got un-stuck.

Name for it?

Yes, googled it, thats the name thank you.

I saw this phenomenon in Discovery channal. You should see a doctor, it is serious.

Eh, I don't think so. My Anatomy-Physiology teacher in HS said that is a semi-normal occurrence, and not insanely serious.

From what I've heard, it can be a symptom of a mental disorder, like narcolepsy, but it can also happen to completely normal people, and it's pretty common. So if it doesn't happen again, you probably shouldn't worry about it.

This is the first time it happened. I know I was in the middle of some dream when it happened, not sure if it's related to that.

This has happened to me as well a few times; strangely it has occurred before actually falling asleep, iirc.

Another explanation is that you've been abducted by aliens and it takes a while before you get control over your body again.

Strangely, the dream was something to do with gaming and when I awoke I thought the DRM had taken over my body.

Your body sort of "turns itself off" during most of sleep, to prevent you from hurting yourself. Sleep paralysis experienced while awake is just a remnant of that; sometimes your body doesn't get the signal right away to "turn back on" the muscles for you to move again. Its actually not serious at all, but it could obviously become so in specific, inopportune situations, over which you'd have little control.

I get this all the time. I'd be surprised if it's at all serious.

What's cool is that this is a very easy mental state from which to produce an out-of-body experience. I recommend trying to roll out of bed.

I get this sometimes. I'm not sure if it's the same because I don't have anyone waking me up or a dream. It is somewhat unpleasant experience knowing you lose control of your body so I always wake up but not without a fight though. I always try to scream for help but I'm not actually screaming. I bet you whenever I try to flex/jerk my muscles I'm not actually doing anything lol.

I don't know what triggers it. I think I get this whenever I'm tired but not physically tired enough to sleep through the night. Good to know that it actually has a name.

I find the best way to get out of it is to move my feet via my ankles. It's one of the few places that I can control.

Just had it happen the other day. Scary as all get out.

Sleep paralysis.

Narcolepsy is a mental disorder?
