Is there any low-graphics mod for this game?

I'd desperately love to play maps with more than 3-4 players, but I lag waaay too much.

So I had a thought, has anybody put out a mod designed to increase game speed? I don't mind how bad it looks, I just want to play a huge map

No, the graphics engine is off-limits as far as modding is concerned. It's under license from Gamebryo so not much can be changed. You'll just have to invest in a better computer I guess, or at least a video card. You can get one that works well on Huge maps for dirt cheap these days, less than $100.

Have you already gone into options and chosen low graphics? That did it for me (and eliminated a lot of crashes, too).

Yes, I've already done all of that. And my computer is WAY past upgrading, the GPU is the best part of it. I still have a single-core Intel Mobo with only an AGP slot, so there's no use...

you can even further decrease graphics by changing some values in the civilizationIV.ini (all of the bink settings and hidemoviebackground) - did you try that?

For what it 's worth, I recently returned to playing CivIV and I'm running it with a seven year old AMD Athlon 2400 and two Gigs of RAM. I have a 512 MB AGP card from Newegg that cost a whole $69 and I'm able to run games with 8 civs so far with no lag despite having all of the graphics options enabled.
If you're running WinXP try Start>Run and type msconfig and hit Enter. From the menu that pops up click Startup. It will show you all of the programs that are loading automatically when your machine starts. Some of them are unnecessary and they could be robbing you of resources.

Ouch! I still have CivIII: Complete loaded and although I don't have any graphics issues I sure do miss being able to bombard something into oblivion.
