"Is this a DemoGAME?"

A reflection of recent events of the Demogame by CivGeneral

I have been a member of the Demogame eversince The summer of 2003 when the first Demogame for Civ3 was just ending with a victory. I was attracted to the close knit community where everyone has gotten along and there were no personal Vendettas or conspiricies against one another. I felt like if there was a sense of community in demogame's pasts, especialy the first few demogames in Civ3 and what I feel personaly has vanished at this point.

In recent times after the whole debate about some little nit pick rule back in term 3 in this demogame has kind of turned me off because there were people fighting between each other and destroying any sense of community and cooperation between players. I have tolerated these sourt of debates in the past and did my best to avoid them because I felt that they were distracting from the actual game playing.

Buddha has said that "Holding on to anger is like grasping a hot coal with the intent of throwing it at someone else; you are the one who gets burned." From what I have seen, people on both sides are holding anger in themselves because they feel that the other person is against him or her and would lash out against each other eather by verbaly or by resorting to posting a CC against that particular person. When I saw DaveShack posting a CC against the entire Judicary, I felt devistated, treated unfairly, as well as hurt because I feel that I have no part inbetween a Vendettas between the two people. I also felt disapointed because Dave was encouraging to "act and ask forgiveness if someone complains, instead of asking permission and failing to act until it is given." as well as encuraging that we return back to our demoGAME roots which I fully agree with.

We have became a demogame that cares more about laws, regulations, and other Buerocratic nonsense. We have became a demogame that does not care about forming a close, tight community as it was in Civ3 Demogame 1-2. Seeing people such as myself who have no bussiness in other people's conflicts and remain neutral in them and being draged into them realy just disapoints me. It disapoints me because it generates unwanted scapegoating that no neutral citizen deserves.

I thought I would return to the demogame, hopefully to see a sense of community as well as a friendly atmosphere. But instead, I still see the same things that has plagued past demogames that turned me off, citizen against citizen. In Matthew 18:21-35 Jesus tells about the parable of the Unmerciful Servant and the moral of that story is that one should "Do onto others as you would wish them do onto you." Which in summary means; repsect the other person and he will respect you, disrespect the other person and he will direspect you.

Personaly, I am a nice, repsectaful, honest person. But the thing that I dont like is when people who are nice to me, turn around and become unkind to me. I guess thats why there are so few demogame players around here because we dont follow the golden rules which should be common sense . What I find that is turning off many of the demogame players are (this is just from my opinion):

1. Distractions and focus on the ruleset insted of the game itself
2. Witnessing disrespect and hostility between two citizens
3. Being in a middle of a conflict between two citizens that the person feels that he or she has no bussiness or choses to remain neutral
4. Complex rulesets
5. No stimulating or exciting discussions in regards to the game.

Hopefully, I would one day see the Demogame back to its roots where people cooperated with eachother and forming a strong sense of a community. Also, just a reminder I am not attacking anyone, I am just expressing my feelings in regards about this game in general.

Well said CivGeneral. I don't think we need an amendment or anything, or we should hold personal vendettas (although that may have been the vibe I have been giving off lately.) I just think the only thing dividing us is the way the CoL is being interpretated right now. The judiciary (donsig mostly, however not sayig this to badmouth you) has been jumping on every little thing that has happened, without a citizen's complaint. If the citizens find it fair, why go through all the trouble of making a ruling on it, and arousing un-needed arguments. Has anyone realized most of the polls and posts start out asking something, and in the end are just heated debates over the law between the judiciary and a government official. I generally myself, like close-knit communities, because they are more fun, and even though my first demogame (being this one) has been fun, I think it would be a lot better if we just "went with the flow."

This is my first demogame. I was drawn to it becuase I like CivIV and all the others for that matter, and was very intersetted in running a Civ "goverment". I have already noticed though, some members like to get caught up in all the beuracratic non-sense that drags out the game. Instead of relaxing the rules, why can't we just follow them? I mean I'm not even sure if this is what I want, but it's just and idea. I mean, if we follow them, we won't have to get caught up in the bureacratic bulls**t. I think our goverment might need change, a revolution so to speak. I have an idea I'll post tonight or in the next couple days (sometime inbetween finals and semster projects, lol). Yah, I got ideas...

Thing is, to me, that we follow the rules, to a great extent. However, living in America in RL, I realize how many people like to find loopholes in the law, and exploit them. Here it seems like it's the other way around. The Judiciary is finding the loopholes and exploiting them. And please everythig I say here I am just speaking my mind. If I refrence anyone's name (which I haven't much yet) it's nothing personal, it's just whatever is best for the demogame needs to be said.

...Let the witch-hunts begin!

The funny thing is that our recent problems of distraction from the game have been nit-picky to a ridiculous level. We have an office open which, because the way the rules are designed, is absolutely required to be filled in order for the game to proceed, if one strictly follows the rules. We can't declare peace, couldn't declare war if we wanted, can't change taxes, nor can we have elections without having the Censor position filled.

I don't want these distractions. I don't seek them, nor do most of the citizens. I just want the game to move on without further roadblocks being put in our way.

I would also like to take a moment to open up the floor on how we can improve uppon in this game :).

Ideas on improving the game:

  • The balance between Civ and Democracy is a bit heavy on the Democracy side right now. To center the game, add a bit more Civ to the equation.
  • Focus on the mountains and beams. Ignore the anthills and specks.
  • Reward those who take initiative, don't tear down that work
  • If someone doesn't do something the "right way" step back and do these things
    • Examine why the "right way" is right. Consider the chance that the different way might be better.
    • If there really is a right and wrong way, don't just tell the "offender" that they've "done it wrong" -- teach them the right way.
    • If something isn't done quite right, but it has a reasonable result in an unimportant area, then just accept it instead of challenging its authenticity. However, asking for this, when the results are far-reaching or the wrongness is egregious, is too much to ask. Some conflict will remain.

My quick idea, balance out the judicary branch with the rest of the goverment. Gah, my ideas are coming together, will post soon...!

@Daveshack: About the "right way", I would like to add that when something isn't done the right way according to the CoL, but it greatly benefits our fine Civ, don't try and reverse it or take judicial action. If I kill the man who tries to kill my brother, it is wrong, but it is the right thing.

The Bureaucracy is expanding to meet the needs of an expanding bureaucracy

Somehow I feel that this quote is made for this demogame

Just a side note, I have been considering on leaving the demogame because of all the drama that has been happening here. However, I am not leaving just yet because I still see hope in this Demogame to bring it back up to it's feet and hopefully myself and others who are tired of the drama would remain in the Demogame :).

After this term I might also leave the demogame, and just focus on the RPG, it's gotten to the point of ridiculous.
