Is this game length normal?

I like to play my games even when I am assured of winning. It's not just to get the stupid victory message at the end, but about control and power. I like to play games where I just control the world economy and extend my influence over the entire world. My games take weeks to play.

I have a ton of abandoned games, ranging from 1000BC onwards, where I know I've won and didn't go back. I only tend to push through wins when I get a particular attachment to a map, or if its an xOTM, or HoF attempt.

E.g. the last game I actually completed was as Spain, random map, Regent level. I started on a small, dry, barren (mostly plains/desert/tundra) island... with me at one tip, and China at the other end! One of us had to go, and it wasn't me :D

At this point I thought it was a 'pelago, or at worst a continents map. Imagine my surprise to find the other 6 civs all sharing one large landmass! Now that was fun (1750AD diplo win, for the record).

You might check out the GOTM/COTM results page (here's a link to the latest results); the playtime for each submittal is listed. For standard sized maps, many good results will be in the 20-25 hour range, or less. Some of the longer times are due to players leaving the game up overnight, so those aren't necessarily accurate.

"Wow, you people have long games! My longest game was my first and only emperor win. 10 hours." - NintendoHut

I agree with NintendoHut, the hours it takes for you guys to complete a game is actually ridiculous. You must have extremely slow computers for it to take that long. Either that or it's just that I'm some hybrid that performs tasks extra fast. :)

The longest I've ever had to take was six hours.

It's not slow computers. I like to take time to think about the game and the strategy. I enjoy long-lasting games rather than storming through a game super fast.

i have won a domination game in 40 minutes. it was a tiny map, but that's not the point. The point is games dont have to last for 20+ hours. it depends on whether you want to MM everything

While I (almost) never leave the game running overnight, I *do* leve it on when I have to cook dinner, or my wife asks me to help her with something, or I have to run to the store, etc. So bits and pieces of "wasted" time creep in.

OTOH, I don't treat Civ like a wargame, or even a RTS. It is a turn-based Strategic game, a Civilization Building game. I like to think about the strategies I am using, and plan what comes next. If I wanted speed, I'd play something else. ;)
