This is an official patch that has been posted on gamespot.com:

it says something about being the patch for the "digitally-distributed version of Civilization IV for Direct2Drive"... I don't know if it will apply to everyone... but I thought I would let everyone know... Let me know how it goes!

It's only for customers that purchased at D2D. When the real patch comes out, everyone here will now.

That fix was just for problems associated with Direct2Drive download process. It has nothing to do with any of the problems with the retail version of the game, or any other version in that matter.

Wow, this is the first I've heard of Direct2Drive. You mean I could have downloaded Civ IV the day it was released, instead of waiting a week for Amazon to get their copies into the warehouse? How do they deal with copy protection? Man it would be nice not to have to deal with carrying my CD around.

they deal in a way that you get problems runnnint it every now and then-.... as you see on the support site and technical support site here...
