playing only my third game and im in a bit of a pickle. im stuck on a small island (its not tiny but it just wont do) in the bottom left corner of the map. I dont know, but is there a way to expand across seas in earlier ages?

You can always send out suicide galley's randomly and hope they don't sink to initaly explore. But if there's no land close by it will still be dangerous to send settelers to any distant land you find. Seafaring civs boats have +1 movement, and are a little less likely to sink. I normally hope to get the great lighthouse (same bonus as seafaring (as far as boats are concerened) until it expires. Otherwise you have to wait until navigation (or magnetism?) to explore safely.

I hate those situations but if you set the setting on archipeligo yo asked for it if you didn't, just bad luck.

A little trick you can use to get settlers safely across a gap of, say 4 non-coastal sqaures is to use ship chaining. Some consider it an exploit.

Send out one empty galley into the middle of the straights you have to cross. End turn. If it survives, send out a second galley with the settlers / escort units (thet must have movement left) onto the square with the first galley. Wake the units, and load them into the fist galley. This can then be moved onto a safe square.

Oh, and I know is is hasstle to end up on a little island, but remember the AI is likely to have a similar problem. Get those suicide galleys out.

that assumes you already have a galley at the other end

Er, not really. Perhaps I have explained it badly, so I shall try again.

Let us say you have the straights like this -

City - Coast 1 - Sea 1 - Ocean 1 - Ocean 2 - Sea 2 - Coast 2 - Island

now, you start with 2 galleys on square Coast 1, one empty (acceptor galley) and one full (donor galley). You move the acceptor galley to square Ocean 2 on the first turn. End turn. Then you move donor galley to square Ocean 2. Wake units. Load them onto acceptor galley. Move acceptor galley to Coast 2. Unload units onto Island. Start colony. Conquer world ;) .

I hope this is clearer.

That sounds like cheating :) If your galley survives the first turn in dangerous waters does that mean it will never sink or does it have to make the roll to survive every turn?

It's a chance every time. I played a game as spain once adn was lucky enough to set up an empire WAY off the mainland. That was scary. The vikings could've taken it at any minute but they were afraid of mah 25 galley navy.

The restart button works pretty good, too.

Great Lighthouse + boat chain is the best you can do.

I don't consider that an exploit. They added the feature to switch units between boats for a reason. ;)

The great lighthouse also allows for galleys to travel safely in sea squares. that helps, since you have fewer dangerous squares to go through, and more movement to get them through
