I was trying to keep my self awake, so that I wouldn't get used to going to bed too early. Apparently I was too tired to spell even the simplest words yesterday haha.

Few wackos burn several Danish flags in the Middle East and you've already joined the army ??!!?!
Acutally there's lot's of Muslims in the Army. Around 4 in my Platoon.

In (U.S.) Marine bootcamp, they gave a good deal of instruction on the glorious history of the Corps, in all it's valorous moments throughout history (usually the best moments were when the Army put their knees to the breeze abandoned the Marines, but the Corps still fought on gallantly). But anyway, I wonder if they'll mention anything like that in Danish Army bootcamp.

"Today, we are going to learn how many HOURS we lasted against Germany in 1940, before we surrendered. Prepare to take notes, recruits. Any post-it note will do!" I could be wrong, but I would guess it was the fastest surrender/capitulation for any modern, industrialized nation in history.

Just razzin' ya. Serve proudly... and good luck, God speed, and Semper Fidelis! ;)

Well Lotus the thing is that in 1940, the army had long suffered from the Politicians fundcuts, plus they were told not anything that could offend the Germans (Such as load the Guns, places explosives under bridges etc.)

Because of the Politicians, the Army was small, badly equipped and not allowed to prepare it self before the invasion. Add to that that Denmark is small and totally flat, there's not much yo can do. Plus the Army wasn't defeated in a few hours, the Politicians simply gave up in a few hours to avoid innecessary bloodshed.

During the war though, Danish resistance did well against the Germans. And after the War, the Danish military has been constantly involved in missions abroad. Today our soldiers are among the best. The Brits simply love to coorporate with us for an example (While they prefer to stay away from the Americans) We have around 1200 troops deployed in Kosovo, Iraq and Afghanistan, and the numbers are ever increasing. That's pretty good results from a five million nation.

Edit: About the traditions, we're mostly told about the old stuff, since we're an Old Guard Hussar Regiment, a Regiment which did very good against the Germans last time is was given a chance to fight them.

^ Thats good news. When I become a ruler of small but proud nation I shall ask the Danes for help :goodjob:

It is surprising how little I know about the history of your military..... that should change.

Hey, just curious, what point of view do they teach you in Danish schools, regarding the U.S. acquisition of the Virigin Islands from Denmark?

That we sold them to you in a fair trade. We needed money, you wanted the Islands. No biggie :)

Yeah, just wondering. Wikipedia is just full of opinions. You never know who's writing it, or what bias they may have. It's more like reading a forum (as far as gaining knowledge from a credible source goes) than it is reading an encyclopedia.

During the submarine warfare phases of the First World War, the USA, fearing that the islands might be seized by Germany as a submarine base, approached Denmark to sell the islands to the USA. On January 17, 1917, the United States bought the Danish West Indies for $25 million and took possession of the islands on March 31. The Danish Crown may have felt pressure to accept the sale, thinking that the USA would seize the islands, if Denmark was invaded by Germany. U.S. citizenship was later granted to the inhabitants of the islands in 1927.

-I'd never heard that sentiment, abot 'being pressured' until I happened to read that in Wikipedia. I'm surprised under Greenland, it doesn't say, "the U.S. took advantage of the international situation in spring, 1940, to pressure Denmark into giving the U.S. military access and quasi-control over the island! Those imperialists were at it, yet again!"

But then, under pistachios, it doesn't mention how we directly and purposefully implemented a plan to screw over Iran economically (they totally dominated the world pistachio market back then), after that whole revolution/hostage insult in the late 1970s. In the San Fernando Valley (aka the breadbasket of the world, where 1/4 of all food production in the U.S. is grown) of northern California, we went out of our way to plant pistachio farms as far as the eye could see - just to get back at Iran. Totally took control of world pistachio production & market share. That was a good one. Surprised it's not in there. :D

Well the truth is that most Danes don't know much, if anything about those Islands.
