Hi. I'm a newbie and didn't see this in the FAQ's. I installed the v1.21 patch, I started it up, it loaded, and then play just ssllooooowed dooowwwnnnn. There is a long pause between moves. Is there something I should change in preferences? I have an iMac PowerPC G3 at 600MHz with 512 MB of memory. Is this the best I can expect or should I use this as an excuse to get a bigger Mac?

Thanks.

There's a few standard things: if you're playing with lots of civs, early play can be slow (there's a comment by Cracker in the GOTM Mac Forum about this). I have a similar system to yours (but 500mHz) and I only use up to Standard size maps. I also turn off the music and don't usually use Quartz rendering under OS X (turn that off by holding down the Option key when you start-up). Generally if you "turn off the sugar", as someone described all the system-hungry extras, you'll get quite fast play. The moment you increase the civs or go for Large or Huge maps, you'll get slow-downs, particularly in the later eras.

Good luck and welcome to our community.

The reason for the extra slowdown between patch 1.17 and 1.21 is that autosaves are now compressed between turns. If you are willing to forgo the use of autosaves, turning off the autosave preference will speed up the interturns.

Personally, the autosave is too much of a convinient backup system for me to turn it off as I sometimes make misclicks.
