It's a U.S. thing. The poster doesn't realize people outside the U.S. don't like good foods, but prefer horrible things like vegemite. Kidding of course. Although people do like vegemite.
I don't really like my food to be sweet, unless it's a dessert, so I'm not a big fan of jam or jelly.. Don't really like overly sweet desserts either, unless it's caramel, and I had a big phobia of strawberries when I was a kid (don't ask, it doesn't make any sense), so I never ever eat jam.. or jelly. Actually, I do like one kind of jam (or jelly, not really sure which it is).. It's made from peppers, and it is spicy as well as sweet..
As for peanut butter, I had it for the first time a year or so after I came to Canada (grade 8), and I hated it. I only like it in reese cup form - I love those things, hate pb otherwise.
So yeah, I have never had a pb & jelly sandwich, nor does that sound particularly appetizing to me.
On my trip to Europe, where peanut butter supplies were restricted, I discovered the delicious and closely related NJ sandwich. That's right, nutella and jam. It kind of has the nut flavor via hazelnuts, but also chocolate and fruit. What's not to like about that?
Jelly – Jelly is a lightly coloured gelatinous type of Jam that you could almost call ‘Jam-Lite’ which I have not seen in Australia. There are no seeds or pieces of fruit in this form.
Jam – This is what you are more used to and is a clearish fruit preserve that you normally put on your toast. It contains both fruit juice and pieces of fruit finely chopped up.
Preserves – This is more of a fruit puréed and contains large chunks of the fruit and full seeds within it.

That sounds rather nasty tbh. The only things Nutella goes well with are either peanut butter (be prepared with a glass of water though ) or fluff (if you want diabetes).

Having actually had 4 NJ sandwiches, I think it works. The key is to not overdo either ingredient or you get insta-diabetes. I can't see a PB/N sandwich working, since they serve a similar role in the PBJ formula--nutty, thick, viscous pastes to use as a base layer to prevent fruit seepage into the bread.
I have heard of the fluffernutter, which sounds like something you get in the unsavory part of town. It is a peanut butter/marshmallow fluff sandwich. I've never actually tried this, but I could see how a Nutella/marshmallow fluff sandwich could work using the above logic of PB -> N. It'd be like a big, soft, S'more.
