JB2 - Neo-Fascists (C3C Deity)

As long as the Greeks and Mayans are fighting, I don't think we can lose if you hold elections.

Nuclear weapons might be useful, though it does open us up to nuclear counter-attacks. Going for Nuclear power (and nuclear plants) is a good thing in any case to raise our productivity.

AD 1830 (Inherited turn)
I start by switching some MA builds to MI. We have no strategic reserve on the mainland, and that's really bad. Fix some happiness troubles, etc. Next turn!

IT: Tula gets smoked. New Heraclea gets smoked. The stack outside of Tenochtitlan gets stomped and we lose a pile of slaves. Somewhere along the way our Aluminum route to the homeland gets cut. Not a big deal; MI are more important in such a drastic situation.

AD 1832 (1)
Washington Airport > Walls
New Varna Library > Walls
etc.
We have the UN? Why hasn't this been discussed earlier? I turn down the vote for now, but it's something to keep in mind. Maybe a way out. I hope we didn't just rush that airport in Washington, because it's now completely indefensible. I let it stand anyway, since there's a chance it'll escape SJ's attention. 1 vet MI defending it. Somewhere along the way we dropped down to 6 luxuries, so entertainment gets increased to 30%.

IT: Washington falls after all.

AD 1834 (2)
Septum: Derrick > MI
Amorium Derrick > MI
I spend the entire turn repelling Mayan incursions into our territory. We suffer no losses and blow up a bunch of expensive materiel.

IT: Mayans sue for peace; I send them away. Delphi flips to Greece.

AD 1836 (3)
Heraclea Derrick > MI
Chalcedon Derrick > Factory
Another turn of repelling invasions. I decline to rush the harbor in our Aluminum almost-a-port since I still want MI more than MA. I also start shelling Mayan Nanking with leftover guns.

IT: No Mayan attacks, but several incursions.

AD 1838 (4)
No interesting builds. Rush a harbor in Philadelphia (Al) so that the next player has the option to build MA on the inherited turn. Start popping intruders, and I pop Justinian along the way! An MA army will be so very sweet.

IT: More nonviolent incursions.

AD 1840 (5)
Sardica Derrick > Factory
Zapped all the intruders and even took Nanking. That's where our Army is right now; it's safe from flips for this turn only. Don't let insurgents get their grubby hands on our prize general. Aluminum is in supply back on the home island. Luxuries are still a problem, but a revolt is out of the question at this point. Keep pounding. Watch Etreria and Teotihuacan. Our cluster of cities on the far eastern edge of the continent haven't been bothered much, but don't ignore them. Absolutely do not let Philadelphia fall. Use Civil Engineers aggressively on the mainland to get our culture and walls built up. Don't forget that in spite of our lack of airports, we have airbases in all 3 of our theatres on the mainland, so reinforcements can be sent anywhere.

I don't know what else to say. If your religion believes in the use of prayer beads of any sort, it might help to drape several of them on your computer when you play the next turn. If not, may the generic blessings of Luck follow you closely.

Guernica-style -- to the max!

Ya, it is a really rough part of the game. Maya is really strong and our resources are really stretched.

Ya, the Airport was rushed. The town had aluminum and it seemed worth keeping. I didn't get your indefensible comment though. Just draft and send some MI - which was why the airport was rushed - to get the units there in time. Not that it really matters as you got Aluminum back. I should have probably mentioned this in my report. So much is going on that it can be hard to cover everything.

I didn't know we had the UN either. I am guessing it is in Athens? That city has a lot of wonders

Good luck with this Kuningas. I am still hoping we can get on top of the situation. An MA army will really help. Is this our first leader?

If we can capture the cities on the Greek side of our line of cities that cuts the continent in half and can close the gaps in the Northeast of our line, I think we will be in much better shape.

Also bombardment is a very valuable tool in keeping the Mayans from being able to get first strike on us. I would continue to close off access (though this does make it harder to link towns when we capture them).

On the 1830/1832 IT, the town that linked Washington and Philadelphia was burnt to the ground. With the loss of that road, it became impossible to reinforce or evacuate Washington by land, and that caused a mental block. That I failed to dump conscripts into it by air is a sign of grossly :smoke: thinking, and we all get to pay for it. At least we still have aluminum.

I still feel really ambivalent about turning down the UN vote. We couldn't have lost, you're right, but it seemed like it would've been a letdown to win like that. Of course, I may eat my words if we lose by Space, since that will involve the same emotions except with elation & relief replaced by frustration & bitterness. And maybe it's all moot; we whipped on the Greeks a whole lot, so they quite probably would have just abstained.

The army we now have will go a long way towards cleaning up the Mayans in the western half of the continent. The airforce and our collection of MA+artillery are each effective fighting forces in their own right. One should be used to hold off the Mayan assaults in the east and the other should be used to conquer the west.

Pre notes
-I dislike Diplomatic victory. It's too cheap. If the UN vote comes in my turn, I won't take it.

-Unclaimed Dyes on west shore. Rushed settler on Samasata.

-Varna begin to build Heroic Epic.

IT Despite slightly injured MI Army on Nanking. Maya aggressively bounced city and killed Army.
1842AD
I kill intruders and took Nanking & Beijing.

IT Eretria lost and South East silks city culture flipped.
1844AD
Immediately steal from Maya (2000gp). Success, Stealth stolen.
I offer Stealth on Greece for Fission/Space Flight. Failed they are insulted.

Chengdu and Shanghai captured both were defended with only one MI.
Eretria recaptured there was one MA.
GL Belisarius rises from the ashes. New MI army created.

IT Maya sent couple of MIs /MAs.
1846AD
Could have taken 2 Mayan cities but I don't want to jeopardy defence. I kill 5 MA and 8 MI on our lands.

1848AD
Canton and Tientsin captured.
Twice in a round. GL Constantine rises from his grave.

IT Nanking flipped on Greece.
1850AD
Xinjian and Artemisium captured.

I left GL unmoved.
We are doing well on northern part. see the picture. SE part is under high pressure and some cities have high danger to flip.

The save

We are finally getting leaders and armies! It seems funny that we can get stealth before we can complete the Heroic Epic

Ted,
Are you around to take this? I don't remember what schedule you were on.

[Edit: Checked the out of pocket and you should be back now. I can easily swap if you are swamped with stuff however]

A swap would be good for me Greebley as I can't really play until Monday.

Ted

Wow! I was sorry to hear about the army, but delighted to hear about the new leaders.

I was sorry to read about Nanking flipping, but thrilled to see all the land around Nanking.

I'm also glad to see that at least one other person agrees with my declining The Vote. I really agonized over that one.

Are our opponents nuclear? I know we have spies, but I never thought to check on the possibility of nuclear retaliation. For that matter, did anyone even build the Manhanttan Project?

This may be the most ludicrous war I've ever fought under Republic. I wish there were a Statue of Liberty in Civ3.

Preturn: Use the leader to make an Modern Armor Army First MA Army . Move about some defense. For the two pairs of cities surrounded by Maya, I disband one of the pair so there is only 1 city to defend instead of 2.

IBT: A few attacks and a few MI lost

1852 AD: Attack and capture Swazi. Steal a tech from Maya succeeds and we have Fusion.

IBT: Various attacks More MI lost

1954 AD: Leader fishing works and we build a third army(Second MA Amry). Start the Pentagon. Do some more drafting. Our poor citizens.

IBT: We finally have a one sided front and I can try to complete the line to philadelphia

1856 AD: Attack Boston with our MA armies and take the city. Abandon and replace it.

IBT: Swazi flips to Greeks. Mycenae flips to Maya.

1858 AD: We get another leader which becomes a Third MA army.
I take back Mycenae and capture Miami.

IBT: More units advance, but few attacks this round. Things are becoming more stable.

1860 AD: Attack and capture Chicago . In a milestone year we pass Maya in terms of land area at 40%

IBT: A large stack of Modern armor shows up, but doesn't attack...

1862 AD: Shoring up defenses and setting up an artillery barrage of Seattle.

IBT: Renegotiate peace with Greece. We may want to attack Greece again sooner than 20 turns, but We are not ready now

1864 AD: Capture seattle. Destroy Chicago and replace it with a town of our own. Capture Xochicalco. Can you tell we have armies now? :hammer:

IBT: Greece and Maya sign a peace treaty. The greeks and Mayans build wonders - we can probably expect the spaceship soon

1866 AD: Capture Tlacopan.

IBT: Build the Pentagon and Military Academy

1868 AD: Capture ? - a size 20 town.

IBT: Our city of Mpondo finally falls (it was one of the two cut off towns).
Tlacopan deposes us

1870 AD: Take back Tlacopan, Capture Tlateloclo. Replace the large Mayan towns with new size 1 towns using settlers. We also get a leader which becomes our Fourth MA Army

Notes:

There is a non-existant worker just south of our NorthEast border! One square seems to have a worker on it but it doesn't. You cannot bomb it nor capture the worker.

Our border is much more compact and we have 5 armies now - 4 are MA armies.

We have Pentagon but only 3 units per army. Add one more when they become available.

We are VERY short on MA. The armies contain pretty much all of them.

I was finally able to make progress toward domination. We own 45% of the land but not a lot of population(35%). It occurred to me after I saved that I should have MM'ed all the towns for growth. Ted, you will probably want to do this.

I suspect the AI will start their spaceships soon. When they made peace they both un-mobilized and can build Apollo.

Greeks started Manhattan project.

I rejected the call for the UN. I think it would be a tie anyway.

I did a LOT of drafting. It was the only way I could keep up with the fast pace. Even so some cities have no defender.

Frrreeow! I think I'm experiencing shock and awe!

hitlist.jpg

The two orange smudges mark our enemies' capital cities. Both are pretty close to the front right now. For this reason, I'm thinking that it might be in our interest to not take either of them in the immediate future. We should wait until they've built a few SS parts to trash.

However, Chichèn Itza has a number of shiny, pretty wonders including the Pyramids (pop growth anyone?) and the Internet (territory growth anyone?) -- enough to make a Domination-aspirant drool. The odds of keeping the city are pretty grim, though, in spite of whatever flip-penalty the Mayans might suffer for losing a Palace. These factors will have to be kept in mind as we make out our hit list.

Copàn has Smith's Trading Company and is smudged yellow. A cash bonus would be nice, but probably not worth going out of our way. I include it only because I noticed it -- and it's the only other wonder we could conceivably get something out of.

Greece will sign another MA against the Mayans for a pile of luxuries & cash (or Stealth). I'm less sure about this move, since it could put us in an awkward position if Greece declines to mobilize and tries to launch while we're still allied. Our proximity to both capitals may make this concern moot.

Something else we might consider is turning on the Greeks again. The renegotiated peace deal was straight up so we can declare war on them without a RBCiv Exploit. Almost all their gains have been our cities flipping back to them.

We may want to do some more damage to Mayans before we consider this. I agree taking their capitol would be very useful. I would prepare for taking it by bombing all irrigation (and other improvements near the capitol to get it to shrink. We can then use intensive bombardment to shrink it more.

We may want to mobilize. I wasn't sure if we wanted to keep the spaceship option open. Given our progress I think we want to go all out on domination.

Edit: We need more defense on our borders before considering attacking Greece of course. Our defenses are pretty thin at the moment.

Got it

Play tomorrow.

Notes
I took the slow & steady approach, just nibbling away toward Chichen Itza. I tried to maximise our kill ratio and disposed of a fair number of Mayan MA & MI.

Tzintzuntzen will probably be recaptured in the interturn but we can take it back again the turn after.

I ignored the call for the UN vote as I think we can win this by Domination now.

There is an empty army (with movement) in eretria & a Settler (with movement) in New Varna.

I was going to attempt a steal vs Maya but I leave that for the next player.

The save is > here <

Ted

Good work, Ted. We continue to make progress toward the Capitol. I agree that the slow but steady approach is needed since we are now going after major core cities. One more ring of cities and we are adjacent. :hammer:

Pyramids will definitely help us. We are still lagging in population though taking out size 20+ cities will certainly help with that as well.

No signs of the spaceship building yet, though I wouldn't be suprised if the Greeks started building their first part soon. We have 11 turns of peace - We may want to be ready to declare war at the end of 11 turns just in case. The biggest issue is having sufficient defensive units in our towns.

We would probably gain a lot of production if we were communist. Not sure it is worth the Anarchy period though.

Ben, since I switched with Ted, you are up.

Right on, I see it and am chomping at the bit to get at it. I ought to get home around 2:00 local time.

I've been dying to go totalitarian for a long time now, but we're no better prepared to go 8 turns without producing tanks than we were the first time I suggested it. I think we just need to tough out this war Winston Churchill-style.

AD 1880 (Inherited)
I can indeed afford a steal, but if I wait a turn then I can steal carefully with 1K left in the bank. There's no rush on new technology, so I sit on the cash. I fiddle with some of the builds to improve our MI count -- we've a surplus of MA armies, so I want to put defenses in some of our cities. A wee bit of MMing and we're ready to roll.

IT: Tzintzuntzen given up.

AD 1882 (1)
Smyrna Factory > MI
Our spy is busted trying to steal carefully, but is replaced without incident. Tzintzuntzen is easily retaken. Palenque, a size-27 monster, is at the top of my hit-list but will take some time to "reduce". Tulum is an obnoxious salient in the south, so I burn it to the ground without loss. We pop a leader in the process. I also capture Umfolozi and Taormina, a couple of small towns on the southern, icy coast. It's another aluminum source, though. I boldly choose to occupy instead of burning them, but have no intention of leaving armies in a position where the mobs can flip them.

IT: Skirmishes. The "sappers" (3 slaves) working on Palenque were captured, a small loss.

AD 1884 (2)
Dyrrachium Factory > MI
New Ohrid founded to threaten Kaminaljuyu, a size-31 Mayan metropolis. Isipezi, an unremarkable Mayan city, gets trashed. Palenque takes a rough turn from the air force. It looks like it's in WLTKD, but since I popped its Marketplace & Cathedral, I'm doubting that will last long. I set up another team of sappers; if they actually get their road built, Palenque won't last long.

IT: A few scuffles but no significant loss.

AD 1886 (3)
Sparta Market > Granary
Raze Mayapan to take cultural pressure off of Taomina.

AD 1888 (4)
Teotihuacan Barracks > Library
Teayo Granary > MI
The Great Library is found to contain books that contradict the teachings of the Koran. Since the Koran makes the rest of the books redundant, the Library is burnt to the ground. Unfortunately, the the fire spreads to the rest of Palenque, and the city is eradicated. Wow. The Mayans are down to 5 Modern Armor. That's good. I hurry a couple Settlers on the mainland to aid our advance on Chichen Itza.

AD 1890 (5)
Vidin C'house > Dock
I shell Bonampak till it has no defenders and then drive in with an armor army. I occupied it hoping it might have tolerable cultural pressure, but I was pathetically wrong. Bonampak should probably be abandoned, but it won't flip this turn so I'll leave the dirty work to the next player. It could use reinforcements, too.

I've left you a stack of artillery, a few modern armor, and a settler to play with. If I were playing 1892 I'd just fortify them and use them next turn, but you may have a clever idea to use them immediately. Happy hunting.

Good call on grabbing the southern towns. We are getting close to being able to knock out Mayan Aluminum. They had 3 or so and one was very hard to reach. With the southern one taken we may be able to reach the rest with bombers.

It also sounds like we are making steady progress forward. The growth in percentage of population is good news. I am guessing this is mostly due both to our large number of towns growing and to Mayan losing the huge pop towns.

Still no sign of the spaceship I assume? It seems that intense war is an excellent way to stop the building of Apollo. I will have to remember that for future games.
