JFC-2: Genghis Pope

By the way, I've never seen a diplomatic victory through the AP before. Is there any other prerequisites as well as Christianity in each civ? Also, is there a time limit?

The other prerequisite is that we and our vassals must NOT have enough votes so that we would automatically win.

There's no time limit in the game except for an AI building a spaceship or something.

Are you going to play this one or should we skip you this time?

Here are my turns:

1850 - Pentagon finished in Guiyang. Used the GM to found Sid's Sushi Co but in Ulaan-Ude not Fuzhou (has more gold already) and start building Wall Street in Ulaan-Ude.
I notice there's a whole mess of Christian cities south of Egypt. Hopefully they will end up capturing one and save us the trouble of getting open borders. We had a missionary nearby so I tried to spread in Turkish Bengazi right on the Egyptian border just in case it flips somewhere down the line. Unfortunately it failed.

1852 - Plague hits nearly everyone else. Researched steel, started electricity. Used spy to encourage Free Religion in Russia.

1854 - Golden Age ends so I have to take RR down to 80%. I started gathering a stack in Fuzhou to mount a naval invasion of North America so we can grab a city, give it Christianity, then give it back to England (I can't see another way of spreading the cross there).

1856 - :( An English boat got our missionary on the way to Mali, however we successfully spread Christianity in an Inca city.

1858 - Ethiopia respawns. They are weak and Christian so we do not need to worry about them. I buy their world map off them for 5 gold which reveals that Egypt have got a Christian city in the south (hooray).

1860 -A Dutch revolt in Berlin. This city is useless, it's hemmed in by Hamburg, will take too long to get off the ground and is far away from our homeland. The Dutch don't get it but my suggestion would be we should just cut it loose if the opportunity arises (if we go to war with Spain we could use it to get an early peace with the Dutch).

1862 - Sent a second missionary towards Mali and some troops off towards the English's North American colonies (which seem very lightly defended). We now only have to worry about Spain, Portugal and the Vikings. The Vikings are our good friends, but stubbornly remain in Theocracy. I sent a spy there to see if we could get them to switch to Free Religion by espionage or we can just hope that they'll see the light or collapse (they are v. unstable) of their own accord. I can't see a peaceful way of getting into Spain or Portugal so I've sent our European stack to Spain's border. If we get the opportunity we can very easily get a few off their cities, convert them, and leave again without building any more troops.

1864 - Got electricity started on Railroad (for railroads). Started Wembley in Guiyang

1866 - Nothing to report.

1868 - Nothing to report.

After railroad and Channel Tunnel I really would get radio first. France tends to like the radio wonders (esp Eiffel Tower) but we don't want Cristo Redentor snatched from us.
I'm going to try some easier AP wins first (e.g. with France/Christianity) to see if it's even possible.

I just continued the agenda set forth by my illustrious predecessors. I spread the sushi company to most of our cities and mainly focused on finishing up our Christian agenda. BTW I love Umarth for sending those units to America - they worked like a charm!

Christian Agenda:
Vikings [done]
England [done]
Spain [done]
Portugal [waiting for caravel to pickup missionary]
America [missionary on galleon en route]
Mali [done]

preturn:
Redirect Espionage to Vikings so we can change them to free religion and christianize a city.

turn 1 1870: Start the Ironworks in Khanbaliq. Temporarily swap some of the cities from producing wealth to making hospitals so that we can pump out a Red Cross somewhere - probably Khanbaliq since that is our military HQ and has plenty of room for national wonders. We got another prophet. Considering that starting another golden age is going to take 4 GPs, I hope nobody is going to kill me but I decide to settle them in Ulan-Ude which has our stock exchange.

turn 2 1872: Spain asks us to declare on Vikings and I say no. Finish Railroad, start research on Radio. Fuzhou has the most research so start on chunnel there.

turn 3 1874: Special event, all cannons promoted to combat 1! Conquer Pompeii. I'm going to christianize it and gift it to Spain. Conquer New York which was empty. This one i'll prolly gift away to america after we convert it - i doubt england will be able to hold it. Spread Christianity to Mali.

Congress of Moskva
England gets back New York (i give it up since it's kind of suboptimal anyhow)
Ragnar gets Dublin!
Suleiman gets Pathragada
We try for Fort Albany but dont get it

turn 4 1876: Christianize Pompeii and gift it to Isabella. Spain = check! Convert Ragnar to free religion. Missionary on its way.

turn 5 1878: Finish wembley in Guiyang.
Start some trades:
football - fish (France)
football - 13g (Spain)
silk - fish (America)
football - 7g (Vikings)
tribute -2 fish (Turkey)

turn 6 1880: Conquer Fort Albany and make peace with England (don't worry I saved and checked if we can trade the city back later and we can). Missionary enroute.

turn 7 1882: Ethiopia vassalize to Aztec. Discovered new source of coal near Aomori. Finished radio and started combustion. Wonders now in progress: Cristo - khanbaliq, Graceland - Ulan-Ude, Eiffel - Guiyang.

turn 8 1884: Christianize Fort Albany liberate it. England = check! Christianize Umea. Vikings = check. Pop a Great Engineer in Shenyang. I leave this for Pacifist to decide since we are about finish combustion. We could found either the mining or construction companies. I usually prefer creative constructions since I love the aluminum company, but I don't want to make a unilateral decision here. So, our engineer is sitting in Ulan-Ude.

turn 9 1886: Nothing to Report.

turn 10 1888: Complete the Chunnel. There is a damn Mongolian revolt in Pompeya, it better not flip back to us!!!

notes: There is a galleon with a missionary near the Gulf of Mexico bound for America. There is a missionary sitting in Apollonia waiting for the caravel to pick it up and deliver it to Portugal. We have alot of units sitting in America - I don't know what we want to do with them.

We do ten characters.

At the end of 1888 I got about 1000 cash for peace from other civs. Directed Turkey to research Fission (I know he won't trade it to us, but it'll lower our research cost.

1. 1890 Portugal asks us to declare war on Vikings (no). Combustion done, switch to industrialism. Gifted missionary to America (who sends it, typically, to Islamic Washing...oh no, I'm going to get surveillance from the government just by combining those two words.

2. 1892 Uneventful

3. 1894 Cristo redentor done. Switched to Representation/environmentalism/viceroyalty. Berlin and Washington get Christianity.

4. 1896 Graceland, Eiffel Tower done. Khanbaliq starts on Red Cross (2 turns!)

5. 1898 England and Russia make peace. Netherlands becomes a Russian vassal. Our missionary reaches Cadiz, which, being a border city between Portugal and Spain, is apt to get flipped to Spain (who's Portugal's master), so I convert that instead of Lisboa (which we can always go back to if Cadiz gets flipped). Mongolian revolt in Pompeii again...sigh.
GE born in Ulaan-Ude, build Creative Constructions.

6. 1900 Russia wants us to cancel deal with America (no thanks). Seoul gets Christianity. Our spies reach France (I'm going to try to make Napoleon adopt free religion). Napoleon's building the UN in Milan, which is actually a good thing since by votes we'll definitely win and maybe we'll force free religion down everybody's throats.

7. 1902 Vote for AP resident comes up for the first time ever in modern times! We're the only candidate.:D
Pompeii becomes independent, and we go capture it again to gift to Spain. Egypt becomes an American vassal. Sanchu gets Christianity, while Pagan gets Taoism (I'm trying to fill the 8 more cities that will give us gold from Taoism in Fuzhou).
Another freaking GP in Athens born! I send him back to China.

8. 1904 We win the AP residency!:king:
Everybody voted for us except France and Ethiopia. I think France will be the pseudo-opponent we'll buff up for the Diplo win vote, since he's annoyed with us due to borders and he has the 3rd most votes (after us and Persia).
Research Plastics. Build airports all over our empire (for easy missionary work and trade). Baotou gets +.

9. 1906 Portugal builds Mining Company first. We capture Pompeii and give it to Spain again. If Pompeii gets razed after numerous captures, maybe we should consider giving Berlin to Spain (that's the other city that Isabella wants, besides Apollonia, Athens and Laibach).

10. 1908 Bangazi gets Christianity.

2 spies are sitting in Paris and Rome (tried numerous times to use them but they keep getting caught).
GP en route to China.

So we need 390/520 votes to win the diplomatic win. Which is OK, since we have 317 votes ourselves (just a little more than 75%) so we need to build up France so that he will be the opposition that cannot win. Our European cities should build more missionaries to convert France.

I hate to say it, but it seems that I'm connected to all the significant religious events in our empire. This game, instructional in lots of other ways, taught me that free religion does not bar AP residency. Now whether we can win the vote (or even call it up) is another matter...

As of this screenshot, if we include our vassals, we are up to 367 out of the 520 votes. Since the requirement is that we don't win the vote outright with our's and our vassal's votes singularly, do we actually need to prop up France? Also, since we still have some room for vote-growth, we still have Japan to Christianize (unless Pacifist converted those cities during this reign).

No, but Persia's 2nd. Therefore we need to make France 2nd so that Persia will vote for us. (A vassal will vote for himself if he's running against the master) France's also the closest civ with open borders to our 2 monasteries in Europe other than Russia (who's pleased with us so we want him on our side).
Japan can still use Christianity (I waited till airports to make things easier).

The other problem is that all the other members are voting members only, which means that we need one Christian country so that we're not the only candidate. Maybe we should convert enough of France so that he might convert to Christianity himself, putting him in running (i.e. be a full member).
Another option is to convert to Christianity ourselves, and force Turkey or Persia to switch state religions to Christianity, so that they'll be our opponent.

us: 23 16 4 5 317 18 = 383
them: 9 10 11 1 18 8 15 17 7 3 12 10 16 = 127

So we need to convert a mere 250 pop points (give or take) to Christianity so that we won't automatically win. Feeding the multitude should help. Got it for tonight or tomorrow.

No. I thought 75% of 390 (the number needed to win) is 292, so that we have 317-292= 25 votes that we need to give to somebody else. (Vassals are not counted, since they stand an equal chance of being called on as candidates, ASSUMING that voting members and not just full members can be candidates).

We DON'T have to give 250 points to somebody else. I think just spreading 2 or 3 more French or Russian cities will do.

Thinking about it we were pretty lucky that Christianity ended up confined to Germany. It could have gone the other way completely and given us a real headache controlling the vote.

If we win this game, anybody interested in another AP game like Turkey or Netherlands (of course 3000 BC start, preferably with the AP in the Far East for extra fun)?

Sure man. Regardless of who we choose, I would suggest against 600AD start. There is just too much Christianity out there. My game with the French was close but no cigar - to get the votes I overexpanded and conquered all of Europe except for England and Russia, and have a have 4 vassals and despite having 1100 votes I'm 80ish votes shy and can't keep my empire from collapsing into civil war any longer! I think if I had been a bit wiser and just forced certain nations to collapse and leave their cities independent and more aggressively spread Christianity to my 2 asian vassals it could have worked, but it was becoming a headache. Having the Inca as a vassal turned out quite well as you can assist their expansion easily and convert their cities as they aquire new ones - they ended up contributing almost 200 votes to my cause. Maybe also being aggressive in spreading the non-AP religion to negatively impact opposing votes could work well too.

Sure, I would be up for another RFC SG. My first choice would be non-AP, and Emperor, but I'd play regardless.

1908 - 1921

After Plastics I researched Artillery (although I hardly built any), then Computers, and almost finished Robotics for Mech Infantry.

I built a massive Tank/Bomber army for Spain, but then Rome respawned and Spain attacked it, so I joined in. Isabella obligingly assumed the missionary position and I gave her two. Two Christian missionaries. Our bombers were many and our horde was swift, and Justinian refused capitulation, saying "You've grown too powerful for us", so I finished him by razing Pompeii. The war lasted three turns.

France finished Hollywood and had started the Manhattan Project in Milan when Rome respawned.

I refused requests from Egypt, France, and Roosevelt, but agreed to Vicky's request to stop trading with Ragnar. (Napoleon had asked us to declare on Ragnar.) Ragnar was down to Cautious, whereas Vicky is at Pleased.

Spread Christianity to several Russian cities and a few Indian cities. Right now Russia is the other contendor for AP victory.

With all the extra food from Sid's, I laid down workshops and mines in Khanbaliq (Ironworks) and Guiyang (2 turns from the 3 Gorges). I adjusted Ulaan-Ude (Stock Exchange) so that it can run the maximum number of Merchants.

We got three great people and I put them to sleep in the capital. We need one more for a GA.

We might consider adopting Islam for the diplomatic benefit.
