In defense of dealerships...
A dealership service department is subject to the franchise agreement between the dealership and the manufacturer. They are required to buy specialized diagnostic equipment, and required to send their mechanics through specialized training that they have to pay the manufacturer for. Since that equipment and training is not available elsewhere the dealership is theoretically "better" at fixing your car, justifying a higher labor rate to recoup the costs.
In practice, this leads to an effective business model where a grease monkey with a garage says "take it to the dealership and find out what's wrong and I'll fix it." They don't waste time on mysteries, and they don't spend the big money on diagnostic equipment, so they can charge a much lower rate for the basic 'take it apart, replace some parts, put it back together' repair.
