JOE-03 - Xenophobia Returns

I'll discuss the points you made regarding long-term strategy later today, JesusOnEez, but just a quick comment right now about what I was talking about tech trading.

One thing about AI's tech trading behaviour is that they will not break trade away a monopoly tech ("We don't want to start trading this away just yet...") There are some factors (such as war, and others which I don't know) that will override this, but normally they're pretty adamant about maintaining their monopoly. Moreover, they make this decision with regards to the only the civ's they know - you can see this if you get caravels before anyone, and see how different people on different continents have the same monopoly tech they're unwilling to trade.

I think this means that if a Civ A only knows one other civ, Civ B, they won't trade any techs, since anything Civ B doesn't have Civ A has a monopoly on, and vice versa. But, that's just theoretical...

Jesusoneez...

Ok my newbie is coming out here. Domination is accomplished by land/popluation... How is conquest determined since I tried to do that in SP games but always get Domination. DOH!!!!!

Is Conquest wiping everybody off the face of the planet and your civ is all that is left. A question for Armstrong/Jesusoneez. How do you put those little signs in the game for future planning etc. I am going to sound like Talamane here but I am an old guy too (well just about 50 but feel like 20 sometimes) and NamliaM in another game made a nice map with city borders outlined etc. Is that done in the game whilst in world view or done in a editor such as paint. If you could provide some pointers Armstrong/Jesusoneez that would be appreciated.

Oh yea I agree let's go sailing and find the other unclean ones.

:thanx: :old:

Yup, conquest is just killing everyone.

There're two ways to do it. In the regular game window, just hit Alt-S, and click on a tile, and a dialog will pop up. You can also do it in the globe view. The little button on the same line as "show resources" - the one on the left - opens up the strategy layer, where you can add/remove signs. You can also draw lines, but only in one color. The really nice looking "dotmaps" with different color cities are done in a paint program, but I'm too lazy for that :)

Oh, if you ever need to remove a sign since it's no longer useful, just hit "Alt-S" and click on it. :)

For strategy, I think our main goal is getting our economy up and running, or else it's going to take us ages to get Astronomy. Towards that end, I really think everything we do in our next batch of turnsets should be focused to helping our research. For instance, since we don't need anymore axers any time soon, we can build a library in Brass Lions, take it's workers off the non-gold hills and run two scientists there. That'd give us 10 more beakers right off the bat.

The techs we're going to need are (off the top of my head):

Ironworking, Mathematics, Sailing, Calendar, Compass, Machinery, Optics, Astronomy.

But I think getting Civil Service asap is vital, too. And we're going to want Construction at some point... and do we want Polytheism->Literature? It's all tough choices.

If we skip Drama, for instance, we have no easy way to expand our borders... though we could run Caste System for easy artists.

As for cities, I do think we need to continue to expand, and focus on Courthouses in new cities. We're going to need more workers, too. We're going to need to find at least good production city to put Heroic Epic in, as well... lots to do!

Good direction is literature worth it to get GL. It's usually not too much research. As for Caste system wouldn't we need some good food cities for that. Isn't Sanctuary good but already has cottages. I just followed suit with that but there are more FP tiles available maybe put farms there for specialists. (although city needs to expand first)

Thanks very much for the help, I appreciate it....

True, but most cities can usually run at least one specialist as long as you have deficit food. On the other hand, there are a few good flood plain areas over towards the unclean which could run a great big fat number of specialists, plus the site NW of Lake Placid, with the sea food resource.

Since we're going to ignore religion (I'm assuming we're agreed there), then we're going to want to split or great people between Scientists and Artists. Scientists for the obvious research boost, and artists for culture bombing of important new cities...as we're razing and resettling, we'll have border issues, and artists will go along way to help this.

I'll also assume the long term plan is the way to go, since no-one has mentioned it, but this may change once we've explored and got the lay of the land.

I think we're generally agreed that (since Mao is all but dead), our current goal for the next of our turnsets is to generally beeline to Astronomy...once we get close to that, we can discuss our next tech path, although Plastics has already been mentioned.

Once Mao is gone, it'll be quite some time before we war again. Hopefully we can time our next war to utilise Samurai's and Cat's, but we may miss this opportunity.

Anyhoo, for my turnset, I'll hopefully finish Mao off, and concentrate on getting as much research out of the land as possible, plus expansion.

Turnsets are now down to 10, just for clarification. Now we've got a general plan, I'll play my turns tonight.

JesusOnEez - I don't think we have the firepower to finish off Mao - we're down to only 2-3 axers left. We can settle for two needed water techs (Sailing & either Math or IW) for a temporary truce. Getting 600 beakers from free from Mao sounds great to me. It will take him millenia to recover from the loss of that many cities.

Tech wise, I really think that Civil Service should be a very high priority, unless we go for the Great Library. If we do, we should start researching that asap, and pick a city to put it in. I'd open up Samurai before astronomy - we're not going to kill anyone overseas with axers, after all, and it will help us with Mao + the barbs :)

Unfortunately, I just don't see any good city to build the GL in... any ideas? I just don't see any city with the requisite production atm.

Turn 192 (380 AD) - Inherited Turn
JesusOnEez IV settles in and surveys the world around him. It looks good. Begrudgingly, he contacts The Unclean in a tactical move to steal techs for a period of peace. Of course, he plans to wipe him out later, but for now, he feels extorting him for everything he's got will suffice. Mao gives us the ability to build ships of great majesty, and teaches us to do sums.

JesusOnEez IV feels our research rate is a little lacking, but sees Library's are being built across his lands. This will help educate the people, but somehow doesn't seem enough. He orders his most learned subjects to write stories about him, which, he hopes, will one day be stored in a Great Library for everyone to read. Literature is on the horizon, but something else must be discovered first...

Sanctuary is building it's Library too slow, so JesusOnEez IV changes the priority of work in the city, more than halving it's current build time (26 to 11).

Research begun: Polytheism
Axeman defeats (3.60/5): Barbarian Archer

Turn 193 (395 AD)
JesusOnEez feels he's being too kindly to his subjects, and that they are starting to take him for granted. He orders his security forces to whip Santuary's populace into shape to speed up the Library some more. Sacrifices must be made, and indeed, they were. The people know now that JesusOnEez is a leader not to be messed with.

A great new city is founded, and named Tequila.

Kyoto founded
Tequila begins: Courthouse
Axeman promoted: Cover
Axeman promoted: Combat II
Lake Placid finishes: Archer
Sanctuary grows: 3
Sanctuary finishes: Library

Turn 194 (410 AD)
Lake Placid is training another Settler. Training will take some time, and JesusOnEez feels his successor will get to choose the location of a new city.

Lake Placid begins: Settler
Sanctuary begins: Courthouse
Brass Lions finishes: Axeman
Axeman defeats (4.45/5): Barbarian Archer

Turn 195 (425 AD)
JesusOnEez feels that Courthouses are a good idea. People are starting to get unruly, despite the slaves gloriously sacrificed for the good of all. He orders another one started in Brass Lions.

Brass Lions begins: Courthouse
Axeman defeats (3.65/5): Barbarian Warrior
Silk Bend's borders expand
Silk Bend finishes: Archer

Turn 196 (440 AD)
Yet another Courthouse is ordered up in Silk Bend.

We have learned Polytheism, which in itself is a useless tech, but it was needed for our scholars to reach their goal of great sonnets and stories. The Literature should come soon, but costs are spiralling, and the rate of research can only hold out for a few more years before the scholars will have to rest.

Silk Bend begins: Courthouse
Archer promoted: City Garrison I
Bayview grows: 2
Axeman defeats (1.75/5): Barbarian Warrior

Turn 197 (455 AD)
Research begun: Literature
Axeman promoted: Cover
Silk Bend grows: 4
Axeman defeats (4.40/5): Barbarian Archer

Turn 198 (470 AD)
Axeman promoted: Combat II

Turn 199 (485 AD)

Turn 200 (500 AD)
Archer promoted: City Garrison I
Brass Lions finishes: Courthouse
Sanctuary grows: 4

Turn 201 (515 AD)
The Courthouse finally finishes in Brass Lions, and cuts our costs by 5 gold. It doesn't allow us enough cash to raise the research rate, but our gold was at zero in the treasury. JesusOnEez is pleased that one single Courthouse has had such an effect, and looks forward to the riches awaiting when the other Courthouses are finished.

He orders a Library to built in Brass Lions (11).

Brass Lions begins: Library
Sanctuary's borders expand
Tequila grows: 2
Axeman defeats (5.00/5): Barbarian Axeman
Axeman defeats (4.45/5): Barbarian Archer

Turn 202 (530 AD)
Wanting to leave the people respecting his name, he orders his security forces to force the people of Sanctuary and Silk Bend to build Courthouses immediately. The fruits of this effort will, however, fall on his successor.

Axeman promoted: March
Bayview begins: Courthouse

OK, not much in the way of pictures...it just would have been endless pictures of barbarian beatings anyway. In summary, we extorted Sailing and Math from Mao, finished a Courthouse for 5 gpt, with 2 more Courthouses finished next turn (stick 10% on research may be possible). For now, I'd leave the whip alone. A scientist needs to go back on in Silk Bend as soon as it grows again (it aready has some GPP built up).

Polytheism is in, and Literature will be in soon, although we still need to decide where it will go. I'd be tempted to stick in in the current highest research city...we're a fair way in now, and Lake Placid will be our research centre for a while to come...

So, more of the same minus the whipping I think...

Another goes missing, but he's an old guy so maybe it takes time to find the mouse. (Jesusoneez I like the St. George's crosses comment in Academies) I know how the English love Soccer, or football I am Dutch ancestory (born Canadian) and we love "voetbal" too. When I lived in Holland they went nuts over the world cup and all you saw was orange everywhere.

Talamane where are you? Ok buddy the mouse is on the right side of your computer not too far from your cane. :old:

Like the mace it replaces, building samurai requires machinery. I am setting our next tech to IW (i know i harp on this enough :old: ), but its "only" 11 turns, we need to know where the iron is, Mao wont give it to us, etc.

I presume we want to build the GL in Lake Placid. Comments?

What to do with the settler?

@Talamane,

I'm good with Lake Placid for GL....(as per Jesusoneez too)

IW sounds good too.....

I haven't looked at the save lately but will take a look later and come back with some observations.

I don't know if we have anywhere else, but I would prefer to have Lake Placid working cottages rather than mines... that being said, I don't know where else it could go.

but I would prefer to have Lake Placid working cottages rather than mines... that being said, I don't know where else it could go.

If we put GL there shouldn't we maximize production and then work cottages....

Looked at the save and wow what happen to pop have we been whipping the crap&*^& out of them. Ouch.... What a bunch of tyrants...Don't we need a GP farm somewhere?

Personally I think we should hold off on placing the settler but that's just me.

feels his successor will get to choose the location of a new city.
as stated by Jesus so Talamane you choose we trust your wisdom being old and all.

How about that barb city. We should go for construction after IW if we have math yet?

Just pitching here for an old guy.....:old:

Yeh, too much beating. And with no granaries.

OK, thx. Will finish the turns and post.
