John Carpenter's The Thing [Mini Mafia]

Mat93 was the Thing player.

And it was going so well. Until I noticed I didn't specify that I didn't want to impersonate Visor again. That was a oops moment. And then he was found dead. That pretty much ended any realistic chance I had, except to manipulate everyone into believing that killing Visor would get them nowhere, and that they had to go for someone else. With 5(?) absent that day, there was hope that I would be able to have a good go at it. And then people learnt that killing Visor would kill me. I will admit I gave up then, because there wasn't really any way to win for me.

You win some, you lose some.

Was there any behind-the-scenes action?

A breakdown of night actions:

Night 1
Verarde investigated the Mess Hall and found a one-use halogen flashlight that reduces room investigation by one phase, something that would come in handy later
Zack claimed Sanctuary.
classical_hero defended himself. In hindsight I should have asked for a location but maybe it doesn't matter, as the Thing was making a kill irrespective of location. If the player was in a more difficult room to reach, then it would have been more important.
robbiecon investigated the Laboratory and found sanitation equipment that gave him one additional Sanctuary use.
Jarrema decided to investigate the basement for a few phases and would not appear for the next Day phase.
Mat93, our Thing, chose to kill Visorslash, a player who did not send in an order. He hid the body in the Shed.

Night 2
Zack chose Sanctuary again.
Verarde investigated the Laboratory and found poison that would incapacitate any player for one night.
Takhisis chose to defend himself in the Dog Cages. This was a smart move that unfortunately rolled the wrong way when the Thing attacked. Takhisis was the next victim.
topsecret investigated the Living Quarters and found a disk that contained valuable information about the security system. Unfortunately, he would need to explore the hard-to-reach Communications and Radar to do so.
Jarrema found a shotgun in the Basement that improved his chances of escaping the Thing to 70% if he defended.

Night 3
Verarde's choice to poison Jarrema ended up being a good bet. The Thing didn't know Jarrema was poisoned but found he had an easy kill.
classical_hero chose to defend himself again.
topsecret did the brave thing and chose to investigate Communications and Radar, knowing it could take three phases before he could join voting again.
After poisoning Jarrema, Verarde found Visorslash's body in the Shed.
Zack investigated the Medical Lab and found a hazard suit that gave him both improved chances of escaping the Thing and, if he rolled within a certain percentage, would also be able to complete his original action at the same time.

This ended up being a fun game with some potential snags, especially in the last round. Aside from a game like this one being very dependent on player participation, the number of absences due to the players investigating elsewhere could have made for some situations where only two players were available. While I could have flipped a coin, it would probably have made more sense to keep at least a minimum of three players available.

It's hard to say how well the impersonation in this game worked because the game itself didn't last too long. TinCow's Thing game was interesting in how anonymous accounts were used to facilitate impersonation. I liked the idea in concept but decided to go with the dead players' participation because a: I just thought it would be more fun for the dead players, and b: time zones could have prevented the anonymous player to maintain credibility as another person. So far, the impersonation mechanic here seemed to work pretty okay. Again, though, a game like this one is highly dependent on near-100% participation and thankfully, just about everyone did. Thanks for playing this one.

Em too, I was right -and lost.

And I was right when I said that killing the impersonated person would kill The Thing, despite some people not believing so. :p
