I just had a swordsman die while fortified (no fortress or barricade) on a Jungle square. No chance of a screenshot as it happened mid-turn, completely out of the blue and most likely a non-repeatable random event.

Just thought I'd mention it for those that have never experienced it. For those that have, what have you had die in the Jungle?

I do remember that I have had this happen, but it is so long ago that I can't remember what kind of unit is was. I generally just don't fortify units in jungles, but instead just skip their turn, i.e. hit space.

If you fortify on a jungle square your units have a random chance of dying. Its about the same as for disease on a Flood Plain (though rather than population, the unit dies). Doesn't happen too often unless you are in the habit of fortifying units in the jungle for long periods. It never happens to units that are actively passing through or workers that are working the tile and I've never seen it happen to a unit that is freshly fortified.

I've had that happen. Now I won't even fortify a unit before the settler builds.

That sucks. I was hoping there was grace period.

Raviuven is correct, it only happens to fortified units. You can put the sword in the jungle, just do not fortify it. I actually only recall that happening to me in PTW, but that may be due to the fact that I do not fort in jungle any longer.

And let that be a warning to all ye who dare fortify in the jungle!

vmxa, do you know if it's impossible for it to happen to Sentry units in the jungle? I've had it happen to fortified units as well. Even so, I still occasionally fortify in the jungle if it's a combat area, as I figure that fortify bonus is worth the small chance of dying from disease.

I think most of us have this happen once, and dont do again, not even to heal

Never used Sentry fuction, so I cannot say. I will fort for a turn, if I think it is worth the risk. Infantry covering a stack of workers at the front or very near it. Mostly I just use an army to cover and do not fort the army.

I've almost never used it either. I was thinking perhaps it would be a nice compromise between skipping turns every turn and the risk of a unit croaking. Sounds like it's probably safe, but an experiment would be necessary to be sure.

And only occasionally on top of a volcano. :crazyeye:

Speaking of that, if a unit is on top of a volcano when it begins to smoke, does it die at the point or only when the volcano errupts?

only when it erupts... if it says "volcano is now active" you can usually get out of the way. However you don't always get a warning.

AFAIK, at least if you have the settings set up right, you will get a warning so long as you could see the warning the first turn the warning appeared. So, if a volcano lies in your black area and it starts the process of erupting you won't see the warning. However, if you have that volcano by a unit or in, or directly adjacent to your cultural borders you'll always see a warning before it erupts. At least, things seem to work that way.

happened once, in my first game, to my first ever modern infantry... :(

I NEVER fortified in a jungle again...

The risk is really very very small.

In the Warhammer Mod jungle isn't cleared when you build a city on it. This means that fortified units in the city stand the risk of death, but even with many cities in jungle and units fortified there turn after turn, it still will only happen a few times during a whole game.
