Just bought game - keeps crashing

I have Civ IV complete,

I have a 2.4ghz Quad Core cpu, 4gb ram, GTX 275 nvidia card, Windows 7 64bit and the latest patch for the game.

Yet when I play, three times in the last hour, the display has gone black and I have to ctrl-alt-del to get back to the desktop.

I installed it on my Sony laptop, 2.4ghz i think dual core, with 2gb ram, a decent 512mb graphics card, vista 32bit and the latest patch, and it first crashed during the tutorial.

Any ideas on how to fix the game on these two machines?

I've found whilst playing on the main pc, quite often the screen will go black and the music continues playing when I click on an option from another race after being asked to trade etc..

is there an error message when it stops responding? look in the windows event manager for one.

I can find some system errors, which I suspect tie in with the blank screens


There's quite a few of these dotted around.
Event ID: 4101
Display driver nvlddmkm stopped responding and has successfully recovered.

There's two of these
Event ID: 7016
The NVIDIA Display Driver Service service has reported an invalid current state 32.

this seems to be a common problem with this driver version in 7/64bit (just googleing these error messages) - two things people tried:
- revert to an older driver version (per v190.xx) - though that might not be compatible with 7 at all.
- disable the Display drivers service
