Just saw the video of Darius speaking. The king of Persia.

He was speaking Arabic. He's a Persian, and he's speaking Arabic. I can understand the ARabian leader speaking Arabic, but not a PERSIAN leader speaking Arabic.

In Civ 4 the Persian workers and warriors would speak PERSIAN.

Why the HELL would the King of Persia speak ARABIC? The language is not even close to Persian. Nor is the Arabian culture or race. Darius wasn't even a Muslim.

Firaxis, you've just lost a customer. :)

Hey guys,

Just so you know, Darius is speaking Aramaic, not Arabic. I am told that Aramaic is the historically correct language for the time.

So, Exoma, can we expect to see your pre-order renewed? ;)

Just wait for a mod to correct all the historical inaccuracies that where botched by Firaxis.

I doubt there will be any mod that will change the Persian king from speaking ARabic to Persian.

This is such an insult to the Iranian community! I don't get what's so difficult about getting an actor that speaks Farsi!

Also, why Arabic out of all languages?! What does Arabia have to do with all this?

Is there a running list?

(1) Darius speaking Arabic vs. Persian
(2) Siam's leader looking like present-day leader?? or something else wrong with him
(3) Ramesses speaking Arabic, I think as well i read somewhere on the forums vs. Coptic (closest surviving relative)

Mind you, quite a bit of the botched things they did were done on purpose for market penetration. They really don't care that one customer got angry when they can get 10,000 more because of what they did.

Ignorance. They think just because today's Persians are Muslim that they MUST speak Arabic and that all Muslims ONLY speak Arabic.

That's a pretty hilarious screwup if true.

To put it in a similar context, it would be like if Oda Nobunaga (Japanese Leader) ended up speaking Chinese instead of Japanese.

I can understand the Egyptian leader speaking ARabic, considering modern day Egypt speaks Arabic..

...But even modern day Iran is a Persian speaking language..

He's a Persian, and he's speaking Arabic
Hilarious, agreed, but *this* is why you cancel a game order? Wow. Such a trivial thing, unrelated to the gameplay.

[I would have guessed they'd have him speak Farsi or something.]

Trivial thing? It's an insult to my people...

How do you think a German would feel is Otto Von Bismarck began speaking Hindi?

I think it's a good way to send a message to the company. Plus he can always buy the game in store if he chooses to later on.

Some people get insulted easily...

I would think he would shrug it off, realizing it wasn't actually part of the gameplay of the game.

Make Washington speak French and Elizabeth speak Gaelic, it doesn't really effect the gameplay.

have you ever heard of PLACEHOLDER dialog for unfinished games? look at the E3 demo for Fallout: NV, all the dialog there was done by the dev team and wasn't voiced by the final actors. chill out a bit, homie.

If anyone would like the video, pm me your email and I will email it to you for proof.

1. Possibly the Arabic-speaking Darius was a placeholder, as the vid of him speaking hasn't been on the Civ V website for months.

2. Don't watch "300".
