I want to be absolutely certain, there are more Civ4 players out there that:

- Can play on tiny and small maps without any major lag problems with working movies and diplomacy screens
- Moving onto larger maps causes the game to slow down a lot after a few turns, especially after a diplomacy screen or wonder movie pop-up screen.
- That has a NVIDIA card with a fairly good PC that easily meets the game requirements (I'm on a P4 3.6 GHz, 2GB RAM and 256Mb Geforce 6800

Right?

I had similar issues on my system but rolling back my catalyst drivers to 4.12 worked wonders. Now i can play huge maps with medium settings @1600*1200
or high setts @1024*768 however i prefere to the higher res.
I strongly suggest you try some other drivers for your card you system should easily run this game.

catalyst is for ATI, not for NIVIDA or?

Yes catalyst is for ATI but there are different drivers you can try for your card too Take a look here http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp-2k_archive.html
Also you might wanna do some research on google about what the most stable version was for nvidia cards and try that.
Good luck:goodjob:
Try Forceware 77.72 (google it)

I'm using an AMD 64 3000+
Asus EN6600GT 128mb vid card
1024 mb Kingston RAM (DDR 400)
Fujitsu-Seimens 19" Widescreen LCD monitor at 1440x900 resolution

Game worked for 7-9 hours straight the first day but then it got worse and worse. I'm playing the largest map size. Now it will close to the desktop almost every two to three turns. I've gotten into the habit of saving after every turn but it's still annoying. I'm going to try one of the smaller map later on and see if it makes any difference. Even if it does, this game is not that graphics-intense so the problems so many are having should not be happening.

Wizard - I'm doing the exact same thing on large maps, ALT-Tab'ing every 3-4 turns or directly after a diplomacy screen pop-up.

Ya, the game got really horrible at one point. The faces of the leaders were invisible when they popped up and after that, the graphics corrupted completely. I could see anything. My only choice was to CTL-ALT-DEL out of the game and shut it down through the task manager. I have all up-to-date drivers and BIOS etc... on my system and I have also tried older driver versions using driver cleaner between each driver install. It's not the hardware or the drivers....it's the game.

Yup, maps bigger than small, big lag pretty soon. Big memory leak. Basically.
