Kal-els DyP 180x180 Earthv 1.3

Kal-el,

Is there any particular reason you started the Chinese near Hong Kong instead of present day Beijing?

I decided to move their starting location and was going to check the others. While comparing India to a real map, I noticed, what happened to the Indus river?

Also, I moved the starting location of India one more tile northwest and extended the Ganges as well. This better resembles the map I have. I will post more adjustments I make.

The Chinese are supposed to start in Canton, I had intended to change the order of the Chinese cities but either that was forgotten in the conversion of the bic or it never happened at all. Either way, Canton was the first Capital and having the Chinese start there also allows for more room for the Japanese and eventually for the Koreans.

Don't know why I didn't extend the Indus River further north east.

No, that hasn't been added to the Mod yet. The map has no rules attached to it per se but it is really only usable if you have the resources set up as in DyP.

The next version of the DyP will prohibit building on Tundra but not Desert. You can still build on forested Tundra tiles even if Tundra is prohibited. This will allow for cities to be built in lower Siberia and certain other Tundra areas.

I just noticed that dyp covers that issue. Maybe we should talk the dyp-ers into having the desert being handled like the tundra (no city building on desert, but allowed on irigated desert or desert with oasis)?

disorganiser,

yes, its amazing what can happen in a day. At the time I wrote that last post v0.84 was not released. :)

Unfortunately it is an all or nothing affair. Either you can build on the terrain or you can not. The reason that you can build on a forested tundra even though you can not build on a regular tundra is that the game reads the tile as a forest tile. I thinkit is realistic that people build in the desert, it will only give small towns, but it is not unrealistic.

Granted people settle in "Tundra" regions as well, but in Civ3 we can not distinguish between true Tundra and uninhabitable frozen wastelands, except through the use of the forest work-around.

Canton as the first capital of China? The first 'capital' of an united China was Xinyang of the Qin dynasty or Chang'an of the Han Dynasty, both on the yellow river basin The south of China wasn't fully developed until way later. I do agree that the Japanese need more place to expand, but in terms of historical accuracy, the Chinese should start in Chang'an a bit inland but smack on the yellow river.
It's ridiculous how the AI builds cities everywhere, tundra city-building should definetly be disallowed, and what about disallowing building a city on jungle unless it's cleare first. Is it possible?

I am going to put Nanjing as the Capital. It was the capital before Beijing. Beijing means northern capital and Nanjing means southern capital. That should give enough room between the Koreans, Mongols, Tibetans, and Siamese.

Kal-el, since you will (most likely) be updating this map when the new version of DyP comes out, I thought I'd like to point out some minor (albeit very minor) issues that you could change since you'll be working on the map anyways. There are a few spots were some bonus resources are worthless. The reason they are worthless is because the only way to access the resources (whales) is by building directly on another bonus resource (corn, wheat, cattle). A city does not get any extra food by building directly on a bonus resource.

The whale by Long Island, NY is an example, as the only way to reach the whale is to build directly on top of the corn. Down by Argentina a similar situation with a wheat and Japan with a cattle. I thought there was some similar situations with some 1 tile islands in the Pacific having bonus resources on them, but I see you can still reach those squares by building on a nearby island instead. So perhaps one of the resources can be moved over 1 tile, so a city built there could actually be able to use both resources.

All this isn't too much of a big deal, as it happens alot in other world maps I have seen, and I can always move them myself if I want to. (If I see it before I start the game!).

ive played a few games now with this map and china always seems to get killed early on, i think its the lack of good terrain and starting near all the religious civs( and there jungle settler ability) .
i have also noticed that north of china becomes a pot luck of differant civs ( mostly babylon, india and germany). im trying to figure out a way to give china the land it needs to become a great power without screwing anyone else. any ideas?

I am moving the Chinese start location to Nanjing - That should give you a better chance. Of course once PtW comes out you will have to deal with the Mongols and the Koreans. And once I add in Tibet and Siam things are gonna get a bit more challenging. :D

Changes to Expect in the next version of the map:

Greenland will have much more tundra
Alaska will be smaller
Less forest in Siberia
The Faroe Islands will be moved further West (Changes in the Mod allow this, without allowing easy crossing of the Atlantic)
Japan will be moved south a tad
I will remove the extra starting locations
Completely redone Resources (the next version of DyP adds 6 new resources)
Less Goodyhuts
More Barbarians in certain regions

I have been really busy working on the XP version of DyP so I have neglected the map for a while. I will get a chance to work on it some tonight, but the finished product might not be out for a week or two.

Ok, well after many promises, I can finally say that real progress has been made. I have been able to rework some major areas that were nagging at me.

Specifcally:

I have done an overhaul of the west coast of north america,
shrank the great lakes a tad,
redid florida and parts of the atlantic seaboard,
did some work on South America,
decreased the hospitibility of Greenland,
shrank the British Isles a bit,
moved the faroe islands west,
adjusted the western coast of europe a bit,
did some work on the central europe,
added some more jungle in the congo,
did some work on the himalayas,
deforested siberia.

I think that covers most if not all of the changes. I may have missed soemthing minor here or there. These changes vastly improve the overall look of the map.

I still have to put the resources on it, so I am not releasing it yet. I will put some previews together soon and post them so you can get a better idea what the new version of the map will look like.

I may also put together smaller versions as well, but these things take a lot of time. I am thinking of doing a 160x160 version and possibly a 140x140 version. Anything smaller than that and I think I would just be frustrated by the lack of detail.
