Kamikaze CFC Contest !

@ aksully : thanks for the offer but this thread is for a contest, not for all new games.
We are full and going towards the third round now.
On the other hand there are other PBEMs that start and replacements are always welcome (cf the two sticky threads).

@ classical_hero : I wonder too. But I guess it will be really interesting in the last two rounds as some players probably kept a few special tricks for the later and tougher stages of the competition...

Yes, that would be very interesting to find out after all the games have finished. I know that since I have played this and Tanaka, that I can do so much more in the first turn as Japan. Getting a good start for Japan can make the game so much easier.

Special tricks, Oh no, I'd better think up some quick! :) When are we moving on with this? Where is it at?

Sorry about the delay, but Misfit is on vacation right now, and I couldn't
start a game before the 3rd May because of my studies either. After that, I'm
able to play a turn a day - in both games.

And I am waiting for Viper to finish the game 1.

Guess I will pass since I have more VPs in game 1 already than he had in game 2 at the end. Still hold Philippines and have reconquered Indonesia and started to conquer Taiwan, Okinawa,...

Misfit advances to the semi-finals, I suffered a resounding defeat in both games.

El_Tigre is being very hard on himself. I had (in both games) outstanding turns 1 and 2. I'd like to think that it was mostly due to the fact that I spent 4 hours and 2.5 hours on them working out every single move, running the combat odds thru a combat calculator and then striking. I'm particularly proud of the Singapore on turn 1 strategy.

Keep in mind that we were playing Eric_A's TOS scenario, which has only a passing resemblance to the Firaxis one.

El_Tigre played a game with heavy builds of subs (which are invisible in this scenario). While effective (and extremely annoying), I setup a pretty good screen to flush them out. In confined spaces (like Indonesia) subs are limited in their effectiveness. As was shown in the Pacfic however, they can be quite nasty.

I opted for a completely different strategy in my games. I went for a complete air power dominance. From the word go, most cities were producing either fighters or torpedo bombers. In the Misfit Japan game, I only build 1 extra Marine and a couple of tanks, everything else went into aircraft. The turn 1 strike against Sibu, Hilo and Singapore were specifically designed to wipe out initial game inventories of Allied aircraft. Hilo didn't go so well, but the CW airpower was effectively gone by turn 2.

In the Misfit Allied game, the Dutch had (by week 10 1942) 14 Torpedo bombers spread out over 4 cities. They only build 1 CE and no MGs. The CW would stockpile air units in places like Port Moresby and then immediately pound a Jap captured city (like Rabaul) on the turn it fell. This is the most vulnerable time for the capturer because in most cases, there is no CAP to make the aggressor pay. There is very little the Japanese can do against this strategy unless you commit your carriers to CAP operations to support your landings. (Or leverage your local cities as airbases). The Japanese were bled white by the constant air attacks by Dutch and CW units.

It was a well played game by El_Tigre, particularly the tactics with the subs. I won't do anywhere near as well in a rematch (but I still have a few tricks up my sleeve)......

Regards
Misfit

Had a brief access to a computer so to show I did not forget you, I congratulate Misfit for making it into the semi-finals and declare the third round (semi-finals) open.
I won't be back before sunday but Hawklord and Misfit can start their round immediately.

Damn, I'll have to shift from ancient to modern m,ode and try and remember the special tricks that I did not have. Work that out :p

Hawklord:

I would prefer to start our challenge on the weekend as the first turn is a bear to play.

I offer to challenge you in either Firaxis or Eric_A's version.

Good luck to the final four.........

Misfit

I'd prefer the standard Firaxis one as I have not got time to sort out the other one at the moment, having just started a new job. The weekend is good for me. Good luck to you too. Well Hmmm maybe not, good fun to both of us that I'll go for :)
I'll set up asap.
I have your email if it is the same as it was at the start of this set of games.
