KaTiON's Space Maps

I could also try expanding the map horizontally so that Australia/Japan wouldn't get cut.

This is where 180th latitude is.

On your map Japan and new Zealand is bit too far though northern bit of asia is in proper place.

Ouch, that would take a while to do... that part is as cramped as is.

I'm pondering on the idea of expanding the pacific ocean a bit so that London would stay in the center and Australia/New Zealand would respect the 180º longitude.

I could also try expanding the Atlantic, or both oceans really.

You can expand Pacific and Atlantic - it was too easy to meet Aztecs in medieval era as Greece - my Greenland colony managed to uncover Canada, where I saw Aztec boats.

Most eastern part of Siberia barely extends past 180th latitude by the way.
So one or two tiles of Siberia can go past 180th latitude.

Good bug report.

I can expand Siberia's eastern tip a bit further.

EDIT: Current plan is then to expand Atlantic by 10 tiles and the Pacific by 4 tiles.

I'm sorry that I haven't gotten around to improving the worldbuilder code yet, must be a lot of work for you to make such map changes KaTiON...

Seems like you enjoy working on maps though, so that's cool.

@raxo2222 124x55 (6820 tiles) corresponds to which map size? I need to change the name as I feel it is beyond standard size.

Standard: 84 x 52 - 4368 tiles
Large: 104 x 64 - 6656 tiles
Huge: 128 x 80 - 9600 tiles

That would be tiny bit larger than Large size.
Whole map is 124x200 = 24800, that is slightly bigger than Gigantic size.

I guess there is more free estate in space too.

Standard Large Solar System (v6)
  • The map is now larger with 124 x 200 = 24800 tiles (was 110 x 200 = 22000). This was made so that Earth's meridians, and thus animal/unit spawns, could be properly simulated
  • Pacific and Atlantic oceans are now wider which prevents any kinds of contact between these continents before the medieval age (thanks for the report raxo2222)
@Raxo222 I noticed that the equator is a tiny bit above what it is supposed to be, is it possible to decrease it by a few more tiles?

Maybe.
Currently Earth is from -14 to +14 latutude.
I'll lower bottom latitude by 1 and see if equator doesn't move too far to south

Symmetry might be slightly disturbed - Southern hemisphere might be bit compressed.

Greenland should be closer to Iceland - Vikings tried to settle on it.

Ah, that's too bad. I can't increase the map verticality anymore.

Better to leave it as is then, it is mostly right.

Simple enough.

Yeah, especially some latitude limits got merged, and things can exist farther out to south or north anyway here.

Large Solar System (v7)
  • Moved Greenland closer to Europe as there is an historical precedent of vikings colonizing it. Because of the recent change to map size it is no longer possible for a viking-like first contact with new world people, though (reported by raxo2222)

Apologies if this isn't the appropriate place to ask this, but if we are playing the SVN version do we need to restart the game with the new version of the map? I only ask because I have been playing on Epic speed and having to restart would be annoying.

Yes.
But if you don't use rescaled latitudes modmod, then there is no need to start new game.

Map was resized a bit, so you must swim trough ocean to met civilizations in new/old world instead of being lucky with Greenland/Canada colony, and that longitudes would agree with animal spawns.

Also latitude span was defined in such way, that I could properly scale latitude restrictions for this map.

When you say the re-scaled latitude modmod is that the modmod that removes the requirements as far as where you can build things? Cause I used that before the scenario was included in the main SVN

Yeah, raxo2222 has said it best. :)

These are minor changes, continents still have the same forms and resources, so no need to restart your game, especially so if you are beyond ancient era as animals start losing their relevance.

Well I have two modmods:
One rescales latitude limits and other removes all latitude/longitude restrictions.
I also added backup, so you can cleanly restore original files.

Okay, last question: What would you say is the recomended speed for the map? I hear a lot of people say Eternity but others list Blitz speed.

Normal/Long should be nice - you will get tech per ~2 / ~4 turns.

Eternity (20 000 turns) will last eternity even if you and AI do one turn within minute on average.

20 000 minutes is 333 hours of gameplay.
If average turn length is 3 minutes, then you will spend 1000 hours - 100 days if you play 10 hours per day.

Normal in comparison would be 33.3 - 100 hours of gameplay (1 - 3 minutes spent in single turn on average).
