Well In my most recent game I was trying to go for diplomacy Victory right from the start. I was only involved in one war the whole game well untill the end but anyway the first elections for the UN I won and then I tried to get the vote to make me win the diplomacy victory but I didnt get the votes. tried everything except giving them my cities but they still dont vote for me. Only Victoria votes for me the Americans are the civ that always runs against me in the elections. they are friendly with me and the egyptians are pleased with me French and Rome are furious with me. anyway next vote for UN Americans win. So now there is nothing I can do with regards to the UN as it seems that whatever the AI puts to a vote everyone excepts it im the only one who ever says No. then Napolean declares war on Victoria and we have a defensive pact so that brings me into it then Victoria Declares war on the egyptians and then the Spanish declare war on me so right now were right in the middle of a huge world war that had no reason to take place. anyway how do you get people to vote for you????

Something similar happened to me in a game today except I was trying to go for Space Race victory. I was about to win and the AI got a diplomatic victory.
I won the Diplomatic victory once, basically everyone has to like you a lot. Personally I think the Diplomatic victory is the stupidest one.

The most surefire way to get a diplomatic victory is to have 60% of world population. Since you need 60% of votes to win a diplomatic victory, and your voting power depends on your population...

lol if I had that much of the world then I would just go for a domination victory instead.

anyway my question is how can you get other civs to vote for you?? like how can you swing their vote your way??

You might search around the forums for other threads on the topic. I remember there was a very lengthy one a week or so back. As for getting votes, somebody said that the magic attitude number is +11 (net) - I'm not certain that's true, but it seems reasonably close. That's pretty big, and not easy to obtain with very many civs unless you're planning for it. The gist of earlier threads seems to be - figure out early who your friends will be and won't be, and stand by that. Caving in and trading for that resource or tech you really want from Montezuma isn't going to help you in the long run.

You need to prepare for diplomatic victories from the start. Having two civs furious at you is not a good sign. What you need to do is pass all the other UN initiatives first, and then go for the big vote.

Diplo wins are actually pretty easy. Found a religion early, and spread it to your neighbors as quickly as is practical. Not just a little bit, either.... spread it to most if not all of their cities. It's more important to spread it thoroughly among their cities... spreading it to your own cities can wait. You don't want them switching to another religion later. Also, it helps if you found as many religions as possible. Civs are more likely to switch to another religion if they control the holy city.

Do this early, and by the time the UN comes around, that will be worth +5 to +7 relationship modifier.

Tech is worth another +4. Some people seem to think it is the number of times you've traded technologies with them, but that's incorrect. The "trades have been fair and forthright" mod is based on the research cost of all techs they've gotten from you minus the research cost of all techs you've gotten from them. So if necessary, give them a few techs for free, if you aren't yet at +4 and need the bonus. Sometimes I'll even give away ALL my techs to my best friends, to boost their score and give them more votes at the UN.

Trading resources can get you another +2, eventually. If you have multiples of a particular resource, say 4 corn, for instance, just give the spares away for free, if they have nothing to trade in return. After enough turns have passed, you'll eventually get +2 we appreciate the years you have given us resources yada yada yada.

Then of course there's the open borders and many years of peace +mods.

But really, the main key is the first paragraph... found a religion early, spread it thoroughly among your 2 or 3 neighboring countries, and found as many other religions as you can, in order to keep them away from your neighbors. It pretty much guarantees peaceful relations with your neighbors, which means you don't waste prodution on a military and can build your economy instead.

I won some proper diplomatic victories in my early games but since I got tired of bending over I've only gotten them on my way to domination.

Ideally I'd think that having someone on 3th or lower position build UN would be great if you are leading in population. I've never had this happen though and always end up competing against number 2 who always happens to be my best buddy (and so far has never voted anybody but himself).

well in the game I was talking about in my first post I did not found an early religion I think I ended up founding Taoisim. anyway by the time I actually got a religion all the big religios leaders Ie spanish etc. had already switched to the free religion and then it was no longer a factor.

the 2 civs that were furious with me were France and Rome because I joined a war with Victoria agaisnt Napolean. France and Rome were very close allys so naturally Rome became annoyed with me and then furious after I kept refusing to give them tribute. anyway both of them ended up abstaining in every vote anyway because they didnt have good relations with the other candidate either lol

also how is the vote calculated?? is it just by your population or is a combined thing like land+Power+culture etc?

You don't have to get all the votes, so decide at least 300-400 years earlier who are going to be your allies, and who are going to be your enemies. Your allies sould be someone you haven't been to war with, and who preferrably have the same religion as you do.
It's also a good thing if they have a good relationship with each other. Last but not least, it should be someone who has lots of power/population. But remember, it shouldn't be the one with the highest population, because that's the one you'll be running against in the votes.

In the first ~200-300 years, try to improve your relations with the friendly leaders. Always give in to their demands, especially if they ask you to attack another civilization (of your enemies). Try spreading your religion to all of their cities.
When you're closing in on the UN, try getting some of your allies to declare war against the enemies. You don't have to declare war against your enemies yet.

Later, when you're building the UN, declare war on your enemies. This will make yor relations with your allies better. Try to grab as much land as possible, and when you get the UN, vote for yourself.

If you're lucky, you should have the majority of the votes and win!

thanks Ill give that a try next game.

Actually, switching to Free Religion is probably one of the biggest contributing factors. All negative feelings towards you for being a "heathen" are dispelled.

Also, try first voting for some popular civics. They will usaully get passed and it seems to give you a "populist" reputation. Try just one or two civics votes, and THEN try the Winner vote. You will be a "shoe in".

You can't please everybody. If you do, it's likely nobody will like you the most so they would all vote for somebody else.

Ironically, I find that the better way to get UN victory is through wars. You need to get yourself big so you can cast more votes for yourself.

Yes, I thought about mentioning that in my post, but if you share religion with your friends, you won't get a religion bonus in your relationship after switching to free religion.

Yes, but it still seems to do more good than harm.

Gifting stuff (lux, resource, cash, etc) also helps.

Being in the same Civics helps quite a bit too. That's why I mentioned voting on civics first, before trying to vote winner.
