Keep your enemies down

I thought this post was going to be about the benefits of pillaging :D

I have only had the game for a few weeks now and I did try your expansion denial closed borders strategy. Very poor strategy in my opinion. I have had more success trying to beat the AI civs in the land grab war, they can't build cities on land you already occupy ;) Granted, I have only played up through Prince difficulty so far.

Re Theocracy: There is basically no reason to prevent the spread of someone else's religion in your civilization

Wrong, if you spread your religion into his civ you will realize that every city you hit with a missionary you can now see into just like you had a spy there. Every time one of the other Civ's hits one of your cities with a missionary he has just gotten a complete read on that city and will continue to do so. That's why you try and keep other religions out.

the ai doesnt need to have vision in your city to know which units you have there

haha this has to be like Settler difficulty or the one higher.
How can the computer only have only 3 cities? Alot of times, the comp will have 3-4 cities before I can finish my first settler!

Also, it doesnt matter if they AI doesnt "see" your cities or units... THEY ALREADY KNOW! Its the computer! The AI is .... THE GAME! (you know, that thing you turn on with you boot the comp) Have you ever played Civ 3? Regardless of anything, the AI knew where your weakest city was and knew your Army's strength/weakness and when they declared war, they had a Stack of Doom headed towards that unmanned city.

Just try your "strategy" in a regular size map in a regular game (not some scenario game) and see if it works. If it works consistently, then you can call it a strategy. For now, you can call it "The Play on Euromap and Take All of the Land before the AIs can on Settler Mode" Strategy.

By the way -

Economics 101:
- Trade is good.
- Trade makes both parties better off.
- A Closed economy is BAD! (just look at today's North Korea)

You have everything to lose with closed borders! Instead, it should be: "Keep your borders open unless you have nothing to lose!"

He is right ppl......I followed on his idea and did exactly as he said in monarch difficulty and won a domination victory.

lol

so you got two praises within 2 minutes from each other, and both are from first time posters???

I must say, this is really funny and entertaining :)
Thanks a lot for this entertaining thread :)

Howitzer, I am sorry if I wrongly suspected you of mutiple identities.
I apologize, as now I feel it was NOT appropriate nor fair from me to make such comments.

Anyway, let us get back on topic:

Open Borders: I always try to open borders, since this allows ME to expand through their land and also examine their cities ...etc.

The mods have spoken so nothing more for me to add.

Just to let you know, I've been playing CIV since Civ 1 back in 1992 with a 80286 and floppy disks :D So, it's nice to argue and discuss upon strategy, but don't get mislead!I'm newbie in the forum! Not in the game :D
